We have a great architect right now, but he's really just an engineer designated as the "architect". He also codes sometimes.

I like this idea because it is a membrane-first type of scenario. I've always thought the idea of naked molecules replicating outside of an enclosed space to be unlikely. It is likely that membranes were there from the very beginning,

Those statues are from a later period than Homer. Not saying that they didn't have access to dyes during his time, though.

What's interesting is that both green and yellow come from a common root wood which originally meant grow/growth. They were the colors if plant growth - green in summer and yellow in autumn. https://en.m.wiktionary.org&

Perhaps people didn't need a word for blue because they could say "the color of sky". For example the English word "green" comes from "grow" in PIE, meaning "the color of (plant) growth". Even &q

The first floppies we've had were the 5.25 inch kind which were truly floppy. I remember how strange it felt to hold the new ones which were in a hard case.

In a sense, any API that has its own functions and data structures becomes like a DSL. For example OpenGL feels like its own language, even when you write it in C or C++, or C#.

I wonder if Republicans would be more willing to believe in climate change if it's solved through endless wars instead of taxes. Perpetual war to keep the planet cool.

Someone who steals your phone needs to have "physical access" to you. A random pickpocket is most likely to steal your phone and they're not interested in your phone. Most hackers never have physical access to people. The int

Well, you haven't given any new info to Google on that case, at least. If you have an Android phone they could guess your work and home address from your commute patterns.

Ha, reminds me of the days I used WINAPI programming. The message pump would be done with a simple while loop that has GetMessage(), TranslateMessage() and DispatchMessage().

The big difference is that IE6 was a PITA to develop against while Chrome is a breeze. Developers wouldn't have hated the IE6 monoculture if it was as fast as Chrome and had developer tools and features as nice as it.

Orwell's book primary point wasn't about the surveillance (although there is plenty of surveillance there, to be sure), it was about how history is rewritten and people are trained to change their beliefs on command. It's muc

I switched to Chrome the same day the beta was released mostly because of the speed. Nowadays I stay because I keep my passwords synced over my Google Account and I'm not sure if Firefox works with that.

Also the comparison to a PNG instead of a JPEG was a bit disingenuous since PNG is a lossless codec. I understand it was done to sound impressive but if you compare lossless PNG to a codec that just reuses the same frame and uses a lossy co

I had read that if people didn't age at all, they would have a statistical lifespan of something like 800 years (or maybe half-life?). It's just that the everyday dangers add up, if you roll the dice enough times.

Branch prediction is already extremely efficient for loops, it simply assumes the last comparison will be the same. For loops this is true for all but the first and last iteration.

That's what I've been wondering - why don't the browsers add a few more scripting languages, like python? If IE didn't exist, Chrome and Firefox could do it, just for fun, they're very open to new features.
