You put it very lightly. It is not pedantry or elitist hackers, it is computer science . A sane engineer with a little bit of experience would not start off with PHP to build anything at all.

This is a valid point and earned my upvote, but soon being guilty of this naming trick myself, I have to name one advantage that speaks against the minority of dyslexics: the limited pool of available names. SPDY and nginx are short and mem

Perhaps the GP comment could have been better phrased, but read it in impersonal "you" tone and it will make more sense and sound a lot less like a personal attack (which I think it isn't). Stupid statements such as the quoted one should be

Had to upvote you for the being in the same boat. Even worse though when the slide is two lines and contains the following only: [Title] * [Title] I'm not kidding, I've seen this a couple of times. And w

"Mama" in Hungarian means grandmother. On the very very rare occassions when I heard a Hungarian child call her mother 'mama', it felt really awkward and strange, and always suspected western cultural influences (i.e. western dad or moving

Would you be able to share at least some of your current salt config? This is one idea I've been thinking a lot about lately, but never managed to get beyond the obvious package names, which is trivially installable with one command on a go

Not necessarily if you take data deduplication into account. (You don't upload files they recognize the fingerprints for.)

Calling Haskell an academic trap ignores tons of wisdom its researchers shared with the world and other languages including Go already incorporated into its philosophy.

The only useful line to me is the second bottom one. It says the packet loss is more than 4% as opposed to less than 2% the article claims. Still a nice tool, though.

Why did the alarm was set off? Do these locks work only with a key that passes through electricity or have some other built-in secondary check? Really curious.

Ajax requests are what you're after. Store your data in JSON or plain text files and use your favourite JavaScript framework to retrieve them client-side.

I used to feel the insta-fear. All those EC2 configuration options, not to mention LBE, and separate services for everything I could manually set up. But S3 is simple. Big buckets, tons of files in flat order. No magic involved. I've been v

Very thoughtful and provocative comment. My initial reaction was agreement, but then don't we enjoy belonging to this group of hackers? Although you might argue there are no strong signs shown to the outside world. (That said, trusting a de

I understand where you're coming from, but the examples provided are not that good. First of all, I'd build everything with the possibility in mind that celebrities won't actually use my app. Helps me focus on the benefits for the average u

Yes, you are absolutely right. I forgot about this one major difference. However, you cannot generally say if-then-else is a statement; there are languages such as CoffeeScript in which if-then-else works exactly like the conditional operat

Let's not pretend there is a different incentive to submit a URL that has not changed in the last 365 days other than karma points. Though I certainly appreciate being reminded of excellent projects, this submission feels way too automatic.

Well, buried in your comment is the assumption that the alternative must be equally flexible, and I disagree. Flexibility is often the cause of data loss at these companies, see "sorting a column but not the whole table" case for example. P

How to give something as flexible as Excel that is not Excel? I think that they'll gladly switch is a myth. From casual users I never heard "I sent you a spreadsheet", only "I sent you an Excel". And there is no incentive for them to get be
