We like to believe privacy will be a determining factor but even most of my CS university friends don't give a damn about privacy. People need to burn their hands before they watch out for fire.

Very good overview, so let me just nitpick this: PHP: [...] It also has top-notch documentation. It has not. It is accessible, it has always been easy to find everything in it, but it is very far from thourough. You need to hunt fo

Perhaps the target audience is different, but instead of a bullet list of features I'd prefer a couple screenshots of the working product and a few examples.

Oh the confusion. Let's put up an ad that says somelocalteam.futbol in the corner and see what happens. If there is no protocol specified, I have no way to know what this is or if the typo is intentional. I may be overly conservative,

I use KDE at work and rarely touch the mouse to switch between windows. I have two monitors, and a couple of keyboard shortcuts, but power-usage comes with a price. I bet i3 needs a little tinkering too.

I was constantly surprised how KDE makes it possible to configure my environment exactly the way I like, while maintaining a bearable level of complexity in the control panel. Really excited to see this visual update.

In Linux circles, I'd say yes, it's pretty well known. It used to be my choice of DE, but takes a lot of tinkering and is not as feature complete as KDE is (which is a plus for others, I suspect).

I hope this trend continues. Mainstream desktop environments sort of lost their roots. I never wanted widgets, I just need to organize my windows!

I really don't want to see more unnecessary fragmentation in the open source world. I know, free time is contributed to wherever the programmer pleases, but it's sad to see tons of project not to walk the last mile.

I actually like the ribbon. It is a rather elegant solution to a very hard problem, and overall much better than a sea of dropdown menus. Now, if they only could group options to match my mental model of text editing...
