Tech people always say this but forget that being a plumber means being on their knees wading thru poop water and likely being unable to work when you reach a certain, fairly young age. I get it, trades are important, but let's not gla

Your current pay rate isn't working — who cares what other jobs pay in comparison? Pay $10-15 more an hour and you will see more applicants.

I wasted a decade+ on my life arguing online all day. I see what coldpie says. It is legitimately a pointless waste of time. Obviously I am still on HN so I still do it, but I definitely feel it's futile and it's a guilty pleasure

Getting to the final and winning the WC is very difficult, and will be even more so with 48 teams. France could've gone home earlier at many points, same as Argentina. Even getting to PKs was partly luck. That handball penalty could&#x

Our field rewards mediocrity though, so it's fine. A mediocre programmer at an enterprise company can make a comfortable middle class salary.

I pretty much re-read at least two or three books a year. I do sell books if I don't like them or feel neutral about them, but nowhere near ruthless. I still have a decently-sized collection.

School, at least in the US, gives you plenty of quick rewards. In my high school, we got report cards every other week. On top of that, you get homework and quiz results back quickly as well. While the real reward is admission to a good col

In my experience, nowadays almost everything comes within 3-5 days, at least to NYC. Only exception is budget services like Media Mail.

HN is put together with lisp-flavored duct tape. It is not reddit or a Discourse forum with robust admin tools. I had to email dang to change my username (quick response btw!).

I'm happy with VS Code for Python. It does everything I need and it's fast enough — never had any major bugs with it. I keep my setup simple though.

The people teaching in CS departments aren't interested in nor are knowledgeable in practical programming. They'd need to hire people with experience in software engineering, but those people are busy making $200k a year. My colle

Lol. If the author had really tried to fix the internal tooling by himself in such a top-don huge corp like Amazon, he would've gotten himself laid off much quicker.
