I started feeling old and "missing out" at about 18. I guess it is just a personality trait or a sign of depression.

It remained in the commercial mobile app I'd used it for, and it's not my intellectual property anymore. There isn't anything ingenious about it anyway. My point wasn't about how good my pet engine was (because it wasn&#

Dude, don't be so shallow. You'll be surprised, but HTML, CSS, and JS are not the web. To realize this simple fact, you can try looking up the statistics on the number of websites made in vanilla HTML/CSS/JS, or see how

For some damn fool reason we keep throwing beginners at frameworks--they should be starting with just basic HTML and CSS, and then learning JS, and only then moving on to frameworks. It's so damned confusing in part because people are

C++ with asm.js + WebGL effectively bring back desktop programming to the web.

Well, I'm a beginner in web, and I can't say it's easy, in fact, it's quite the opposite. In native frameworks there's normally one idiomatic way to do things, while the web framework land looks terrifying. Actually

Yep, the model of HTML-CSS-DOM-JS implies extreme overhead, and only heroic efforts and thousands of man-years of work and optimization have made it bearable. I'm saying this as I have compared the performance of a simple local web pag

Kudos for the smart solution. This approach has proven itself very well in iOS, in fact, it was the absolute best mobile animation technology for a long time. Actually, the older versions of iOS used software rasterization with hardware a

As far as I understand, this is roughly how iOS UI works (UIView - CALayer). Obviously, this can be done at the browser engine level. I have also tried to do this in my pet UI engine, but found out that it was tricky to figure out caching r

I'm looking forward for a 8K, 16 bit per pixel, 120 Hz, 3D display.

Say, something Fourier based. The problem is, of course, not in 2D arrays per se, but in the RAM and processing power wasted on processing arrays of pixels. You can still use 2D arrays, but in a more efficient fashion.

"Microsoft Windows will support displays with up to 8K resolution" would be better, as using 8K displays would be only useful for the Matrix Architect.

In an ideal world, this would be pointless because if the code requires "annotations", it should be rewritten, or annotations may be just a specific kind of comments in the code itself rendered in a specific way. But in the real w

I've noted that the utter lack of criticism towards your own work makes programmers significantly faster. On a more serious note: 1. Vast and precise knowledge of algorithms and math: to avoid losing time reinventing the wheel. 2. Unit

Yeah, like at today's provathon Grigori Perelman proved Poincaré conjecture in under 30 minutes.

If one read all those headlines and news without proper critique, they would eventually start believing in all kinds of magic, like that one dude can discover race condition exploits in the browser and the drivers in under 30 minutes.

The justify only works out (i.e. not too ugly) with certain text sizes and page widths. I guess in books it is much easier to make a decent layout because the page size is fixed. Another thing is that, actually, design has come a long way a

At any point in time each part of your code is infringing a number of patents that is growing to infinity. Patents are a tool of harassing others for big companies. The only thing that is important is will a big company sue you or not.

Would be nice to know the background of the project. Writing a UI library is not an easy thing. Was it written from scratch, or some existing library was used as a reference? Had the authors had any background in developing UI engines? How

Isn't releasing a free product also predatory pricing? No "free" software is actually free. The developers have just used some resources from elsewhere to create the product (spare time while earning a living from a daytime j

True that, but even if I didn't get to implement my ideas, at least my boss had always been aware of them. There wasn't ever a situation when he'd thought that I was simply 'bored'.

The union does make a difference. The point I was making is that char*'s (and other pointer types as well) in unions make it harder to track ownership and lifetime by introducing implicit dependencies between data and increasing comple
