It subtracts value from the site. It's getting really, really old. Critical thought doesn't seem welcome here.

A bit OT from your question, but I've had an organic lawn the last 3-4 years (in Illinois), and while it's certainly debatable if tall organic grass 'crowds out dandelions' or not, I've been quite happy with the nat

I also like how bringing the RAM up works: it starts with getting the south bridge running, then querying the RAM SPD for timings (via the south bridge smbus), and then programs the northbridge with the right timing information. Wow.

The writing is amazing. I had a turbo-XT back in the day, so parts 1 and 2 really bring you back if you were of that age. Part 3: "Running C code is a bit more difficult. The problem is that the code generated by any standard C compil

The point is not that you can't outweigh all the 'bad indicators' by 'good indicators' that you, personally, weight more highly. If you want to make that argument, great. He said 'by nearly all indicators

Great link. It's annoyed me to no end that people think they can 'feed the world' with just 'one more [dangerous and unsustainable] science hack'. (Hint: the world will find a way to get hungrier)

Yeah, because human labor is so important these days, compared to having more resources per capita, and robots/technology. /sarc.

Surely the moral thing to do is develop non-polluting energy sources before bringing more people into the world? Fix the problem ourselves and not make it our kids' problem?

Thanks. I agree that maybe, if you balance out the total good vs total bad, you could make an argument that world-wide things are, on net, better, depending how sanguine you are about population growth/totals. But the way he makes th

It starts out with "By almost any measure, the world is better than it has ever been." sorry, that's just bullshit. "Melinda and I are struck by how many people think the world is getting worse." Gee. Must be nice

$51 is only the up front fee. It's $77 for the year, plus you need an EBS volume - say $6 for a magnetic disk 10 GB EBS, or $12 for an SSD.

Yes, that's standard deployment practice, but unfortunately with appcache, nothing links index.html to any specific version of the manifest. You can't even query it to see what version of the manifest you have. So you can end up

EBS is still pretty poor for IOPS, even using SSDs. (It's network attached storage, after all). RDS also uses EBS instead of native DB replication, so expect a huge slowdown from native. If you wanted real IO speed, run two postgres

I like all your points, but option 2 is very intriguing. I've never had the time for that, given I use all my mental and physical capacities for my day job. So I'm conflicted; I just don't think I'd have enough time to

I'd agree that design and building are separate tasks and they can easily become too complex for one person, so it's best if it's divided. As long as someone 'owns' the design (for good and bad), it's less fru
