It isn't clear that they were "behind." They were doing something different (and I guess it didn't match up with YC ideas of coolness - not that this really means anything). But even if they were "behind," that

In case you didn't understand the subtext, the point of this is to register offense that their music was used in this way (the opposite of what they would want). It's a form of passive resistance. This story isn't primarily a

Even if that would offer some usability improvements, we've still lost something in how quickly you can draw a circle and play a sound. Don't forget your header files, can you use hardware acceleration?

I'm saddened that you're saddened by nerds relating to each other, talking about things they actually liked and feeling nostalgia. Everyone, let's be sure we stick to the real business of HN: gossip about companies which were

It shouldn't hurt your head. Windows 2000 marked a switch from the 95/98 line to the NT line and that created some compatibility problems in early days. The rest of this is subjective.

Big companies cultivate the mindshare of product fans and employees who then feel naturally inclined to argue for their favorite companies, that's not always meaningfully different from astroturfing, but this doesn't necessarily m

Being rich, being a VC, being Mark Zuckerberg or Steve Jobs or Bill Gates is a lot of status, but despite popular assumptions, that doesn't really rub off on the programming equivalent of a line cook or plumber.

The analogy mentioned quota programs, special scholarships, etc. But in reality there is not even allegedly any such thing aimed only at people who are non-nerds, so unfortunately these things have to be interpreted as being about gender. W

I'm pretty sure there are females and males who have more natural aptitude or preference for one or another kind of technical work. And they typically are stigmatized as nerds when this is publicly known. We just don't have to sup

Is it really necessary to say that women are better than men at making software? I think this kind of inflammatory claim just stokes the flamewar that erupts around here every time the topic comes up. No one would stand for saying that men
