For those who weren't around in the 80s(!) and are wondering what this is about, you can play Head over Heels online[1] and there's also a Retrospec remake for PC and Mac by Tomaz Kac[2] [1]: https://archive.org/de

It doesn't always work in situations where 'require' can't be statically evaluated at run-time (webpack would work in this situation) - for example I filed a bug recently[0] Even though the bug was closed I was impressed

I had an 8256. I read some code in a magazine showing how to draw fractals recursively (they were Koch snowflakes actually) and I had a lot of fun making more complex fractals using that basic recipe. The PCWs had a monochrome screen that w

It's on page 4 of this article: "I immediately went home myself and wrote a simulation of Alan’s interpreter in Basic (the only language to which I had easy access at home), as a proof of concept." (referring to Smalltalk-72)

This has been posted a few times and never attracted more than a couple of comments, I don't know why. I found it a fascinating account and amazingly full of detail considering the start of the story was well over 40 years ago. Check o

I remember one about "The Seventh Seal" where a character is looking for his pet seal and counting. I don't imagine many of the target audience would get the Ingmar Bergman reference but respect to the show's creators fo

Just yesterday I came across an old card with "Events from 1971" on it, one of which was "Sesame Street banned by the BBC". It seems that, in the UK, the BBC really didn't like it to a surprising degree - see https

Also around that era was a game-programming system called White Lightning for ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64. It was very clever but I found it quite hard to use because of the block-based editor. It was not a great fit for computers using ca

I enjoyed this article and was impressed with how far the author got in each day's exploration. I always thought Plan9 should have had a comeback as part of the "Internet of Things" given its deep support for networking and i

Good point as the keyboard doesn't otherwise have any arrow keys ... though the later Symbolics keyboard, which lacks these emoji keys, doesn't have arrow keys either.

I was fascinated by purpose of those 'emojis' (thumb up etc) on the right of the keyboard. But Xah Lee says they are "not documented in manual. Not used by default" [0] [0]: http://xahlee.info/kbd/spa

When my friends' parents started getting microwave ovens (late seventies, early eighties I suppose) the received wisdom was to leave a cup of cold water in there when the oven wasn't being used. Does anyone else remember this?

This is interesting stuff. Could you comment about optimization? LLVM has put a lot of effort into optimizing code at various levels, including the LTO stuff. Will Zig match all this by itself, or will a 'Release mode' still use L

I suspect it is difficult to get the 'raw' output from a cell-phone camera so you are dependent on the phone's processing (contrast enhancement etc), which might vary between models. Not impossible (e.g. having control lines)
