A bit less flashy/more old-fashioned, Niklaus Wirth's 2013 edition of Project Oberon covers an FPGA-based CPU, operating system, compiler, tiled window manager and text and vector graphics editors. No Tetris though. http:/&#

Newsqueak has nothing to do with the Squeak Smalltalk system, it was an extension of an entirely unrelated Bell Labs language with the same name.

The limit was 40 bit. DES was 56 bit and "international" implementations zeroed out 16 bits of the key to make it exportable.

I've used C++Builder (the 200x versions) and I really can't recommend it. Lots of compiler bugs and no improvement from release to release.

I used to use rc on Linux. The details are hazy, but the two main things I remember are: 1. There were lots of little compatibility problems. ssh-agent and gpg-agent can output either Bourne shell or csh. rc can't parse either. I also

I used C++Builder at a previous job. All their software was C++/VCL, they were completely locked in. Embarcadero tried to keep up with the evolving C++ standard and on paper they were moderately successful, but if you actually tried to

Well, Meyer doesn't let any chance to bash C/C++ go unused :) But a good syntax should minimize the chance that an accidental insertion/transposition/deletion of a character/word/line results in a valid program

Meyer argues that a language shouldn't have a separate block statement. Instead block structure should be integrated in the control flow statements. That would result in this code: (I'm keeping your indentation style) if error

The bug was introduced in version 1.0.1, released 14 Mar 2012. Aren't most of Snowden's documents older than that? And we certainly don't know what the NSA has been doing since Snowden collected his files late 2012 / beg

If you have access to grub, you can edit the kernel command line and add init=/bin/sh. That will drop you in the initramfs, and you can mount the system's filesystems (assuming they're not encrypted of course).

Both of those would work in bash, but they're non-standard extensions. The seq construction would work in any POSIX shell, though the seq command itself is still non-standard I think.

For portability you should also use \033 (the octal code) instead of \e, which is non-standard.

There's an open source code dump of two versions on udanax.xanadu.com. "Xanadu Gold" is the most insane codebase I've ever seen -- implemented in Smalltalk but intended for automatic translation to C++.

What's annoying about GNU make is that the language has a lot of dark corners and the maintainers are pretty willing to break things. Half of the 3.82 release announcement was discussion of backward-incompatible changes (and that are o

I've often seen normal people come up with deeply nested directory structures with long descriptive names and they get bitten hard by the 260 character limit. For example names like this are very common in my experience: C:\Docum
