Ah, I meant something entirely different: that somebody looking like a jerk because there's ugly code that is very necessary for good performance... is likely true for only 10% of the time. I'd wager the other 90% are OSS maintain

Sure. One part of the time. Likely maximum 10% even. Very often it's just somebody's fragile ego.

I dig this laptop a lot but two things have put me off: 1. No full AMD options. I don't trust Intel's thermals and performance for several years now. Maybe they have rebounded but I no longer care. For me it's "AMD or

Look in this sub-thread. One person claimed that is the main reason for them choosing Ruby over Elixir. I simply cannot respect that. Having a preference though? Yeah, absolutely fine. We all do.

These benchmarks will be forever amusing. I've done two full migrations of a Rails app to Phoenix and the differences we've seen in our telemetry boards ranged anywhere from 4.5x all the way to 20x. IMO TechEmpower lost all credib

And I wouldn't overestimate a language's popularity. It's mostly a social phenomenon and rarely has anything to do with technical prowess. I agree that integration with the separate LLMs / agents can and does accelerate

If that CLI tool integrates with a bigger ecosystem (like connect to a cluster and reuse data / services) that's already written in Elixir, then that would make it an even bigger no-brainer to use. Also hi, haven't seen you a

I was mostly clarifying what most people I've met believe is a "general-purpose language". I agree with your take on telling it like it is for the practical needs of the commercial programmers / users of a language. And

Thanks for sharing. I would reach for Golang or even Rust if I was you. I work with Elixir for 9 years now (& love it) and I agree what you describe is not a good fit for it. Elixir is a general-purpose language in the meaning of Turing

LLMs greatly reduced my annoyance in learning various plumbing details in Phoenix (dead views), LiveView and Ash. What would be days or weeks of impatient unpacking of long tutorials and guides has shrunk to days, in rarer occasions days.

You mostly can use Elixir libraries in Erlang but due to how Elixir macros are done and their pervasiveness, the usefulness of that feature is effectively limited. F.ex. Phoenix and Ecto, both extremely prominent and important libraries in

In a world where we have a constant stream of memory unsafety CVEs, Rust seems superior. You might not be worried about these and that's okay but it's a real measurable factor by which you can evaluate languages.

Elixir has a ton of really good libraries and a very active community. Erlang's is trying to catch up and they have my support as well but for the moment I find Elixir easier to deliver a full app to production.
