This was published in November, weeks before the big shake-up at the New Republic [1]. It will be interesting to see whether or not the new New Republic will publish articles that go into an issue with this much depth and consideration. [1]

Agreed; the way the numbers work out today, the advantages are minimal. The story looks like it might be a bit different with 4k on the horizon, though.

In my experience, it's gone more like this: Find an awesome candidate for a position. He's on an H1B. Learn that he can only be hired into a position that can't be filled by a permanent resident, but can be filled by him. Cre

Yes, SVC's sweet spot is more geared towards real-time than pre-cacheable streams. SVC stands for "scalable video coding", and generally behaves in at least one of two dimensions: temporal or spatial. Temporal SVC is pretty m

it's likely to be relatively clean of patents and may enable a cross-everything royalty free implementation. But time will tell how MPEG LA will feel about that. So that's the thing. I'm all for royalty-free encoders, but t

Dot size is used frequently, but I haven't seen many static visualizations that plot the series multiple times using cues (in this case, dot size and opacity) to indicate the data relationship. I see it all the time in animation form,

(The Java approach.) Box everything implicitly. Boxing and generics are orthogonal concepts. Also: does auto-boxing even make sense in Go? Between the fact that Go is statically compiled and that there isn't an int / java.lang.I

I don't think the math works out that way. If I have 10 options in a company that has 100 shares outstanding (including my options for the sake of easy math), then the reverse-split will take this to 5 options out of 50 total. Now, ima

How does that screw the employees? The S-1 linked from the article talks about absolute dollars to be raised, not share count. The employee-held shares should just now have twice the value that they had before the consolidation. Am I missin

Transferring an H1b is really not that hard to do. We did it for less than $15k or so and a few weeks of back-and-forth at my last startup. Don't be put off by the process.

Second, given a performance problem, observability is of the utmost importance I couldn't agree with this more. Understanding where time is being spent and where pools etc. are being consumed is critical in these sorts of exercises.

With a diode matrix, is it possible to distinguish multiple simultaneous key presses? And if not, how do you handle modifier keys? Looking at your photo, it would seem that they're wired into the matrix in the same fashion as the rest

Many health insurance plans have a yearly cap on how much you pay out of pocket. So you might pay 20% up to a few thousand dollars, and then get 100% coverage after that.

Note that on Mac and Windows, at least, you can trivially do this remapping. I do it on all my computers. On a Mac, the keyboard preference pane in system prefs has a "modifier keys" section, which is bizarrely separately configur
