You wouldn't be stuck on United - although it's a lot easier to use them for flights on United itself they can be used to fly on any Star Alliance carrier, including some really nice ones like ANA and Singapore Airlines.

I think most non-EV SSL certificates these days are "verified" by sending a message to whatever e-mail address you have on file in your whois record. Also on Chrome at least certificate pinning should prevent that particular scena

I think pretty much all modern file systems (including ntrfs and ZFS) have the facility to support this but it's more a matter of applications and operating systems taking advantage of it. On Linux for example you can set the user.mime

It's a bit pricy compared to your standard $.99 iOS app, but next to a $9.99 ebook it seems pretty reasonable considering the quantity and quality of content and the unique interactive elements. Like other Touch Press releases I think
