I hate to break it to you guys, but the reason Shitsville, TN has has a higher multiplier is not because someone at Gitlab is terribly confused about the relative cost of living in Shitsville, TN vs Paris and London.

They pay people less not because of "relative purchasing power" or because they want them to have the "same relative quality of life" or some such sentimental nonsense but because they can get away with it. The cost of l

Out of curiosity: when you go full throttle on red yellow, dark <-> light goes from red to orange to yellow. Is that really as it is meant to be? I'd (intuitively) expect to be able to go from orange to brown by adjusting the dar

I agree that the sad state of color (in particular) reproduction (lemon market?) greatly diminishes our art enjoyment in general. And I encourage anyone to take an exhibition catalogue to an exhibition of old masters and compare the colors

You can't appreciate Klee without seeing his works in the flesh. I can't think of another painter who used color so masterly and, sadly, this is still something that does not survive in reproductions (I've seen).

Thanks for sharing! I'm not a big fan of changelogs, personally, except for publicly released projects. I prefer to have workflows that use version control for this. Reverting on master, but tracking the prototype in the changelog is

I find the temporarily localized documentation idea quite interesting – anyone else here tried that? > Such an approach only works if your system is small, I see no reason why this wouldn't scale if you (and other people working on

Can you say more about what you see as the Swedish tradition of brainwashing people into policing each other? Sweden has a reputation for extreme political correctness, which I guess could be framed as a more polite way to express the same

Examples to base this discussion on would help. I'm not a hardcore DB person, but I've designed and modified schemas and queries for quite a few DBs over the years and not once can I recall feeling the need to do an outer join for

Thanks! The ratio of CT abnormalities and proportion of severe cases in young-ish patients in that one is scary. 40% of people in 14-49 age bracket were classed as severe cases.

Yeah, I'm aware of the JHU dataset. Unfortunately working out useful CFRs from that is not easy. You need to be able to figure out infected_at_t_and_dead/(infected_at_t_and_recovered+infected_at_t_and_dead) for some time t suffici

Why would SQL (fundementaly) need outer joins? "Because it has them", is not really a compelling answer in this context. A "pure" relational model (like the one C.J. Date has been going on about for decades) has no outer

Since I'm getting downvoted, I find nulls way more useful than outer joins, if you disagree I'd be interested in examples.

Distributed transactions are a non-starter – I already said I want to run master-slave with synchronous replication, which is basically what you want to do in >99% of cases where you have a DB with important stuff in it.

Yeah, equalp is a really useful abstraction. Deep equality mashed together with case-folding. Something I've always wanted.
