I think if you're setting up a personal machine, your reasoning completely applies and a fairly superficial difference, like scheme being a more familiar language can indeed make a big difference. But I think NixOS or Guix-SD vs Ubuntu

If you'd like the platform to be more open, it's pretty easy to do something about it, just contribute missing bits to existing open source implementations like https://github.com/picolove/picolove . The overa

Awesome, dig was long due for a sane replacement. It's output and commandline syntax are about the most obtuse of any mainstream unix CLI tool; it even beats ifconfig and find, which is quite the achievement.

I'd be curious to hear your perspective as someone who is quite familiar with both Guix and Nix. What sort of companies do you know that are using Guix for Real Work (in some significant capacity)? What would be a rational reason for u

Actually, unlike most DSLs, the nix language itself is pretty great and can be learned in an afternoon by any competent programmer, no Haskell background needed. The problem absolutely is complexity, and there is a lot of stuff you need to

Lovely article. The clear superiority of the C64 experience in some respects as well as the popularity of Pico-8 (including amongst longtime games industry veterans) both indicate that something is seriously amiss with current computing; it

I thought their point was that Linux shouldn't poorly copy Apple because they have a different, more power-user centric client base. But copying Apple isn't the problem here, Apple is strictly superior on all metrics, including po

Yes but my point was that the Apple direction, in this case, is both far more easy to use and more suitable for power users. You can efficiently navigate the apple file dialogue with the keyboard (e.g. press '~' for tab-comple

Technically no, because it offers no comparable way to interface to the line-based world of unix tools for interop. Practically, most things you'd do with gron and grep, sed, awk, ... you could do using only jq as well. Jq comes with m
