Is there a proven bound so we know when the best known packing is the best possible packing? The lower numbers look very tidy and we've probably got the best possible packing for small N, but the larger numbers look like there may be

The problem with these studies is that you can't just correct the impact of a cotton bag, you also need to correct the impact of the plastic bags. [For me at least] The estimated impact of plastic bags is also wrong, so two wrong esti

So often I assume a process is totally automated, but a lot of the time I should be more empathetic, because there is a person in the loop and they are usually just trying to keep the system they inherited from blowing up. They have no tim

I have to admit, I got the idea from the beginning of the book Abaddon’s Gate . Solar sails might not be required but I think there’s a future in people plotting slingshot trajectories and sending packages around the solar system as fast

But the higher orbit would reduce the drag. You could probably get away with the same size sail, but you’ve got to start high enough that the sail’s tiny thrust over its 50% (ish) duty cycle can overcome the drag present in 100% of the orb

I didn’t work on Lightsail, but the article implies that it does aim the sail. It isn’t expanding/contracting, but it does change orientation using the reaction wheels. Basically, they turn the sail broadside to catch the sunlight to

Sometimes I am amazed at the cognitive flexibility of a writer to turn something into a story. Couples that aren't married and live in different houses? So... dating? This is a story about old people dating? Where a lot of them are

No, it isn't that TVM is disappearing. I will always prefer to have a good thing now rather than wait until the future. I will also always prefer to have more of a good thing rather than less. Those two reasons together are why we

No. The investment vehicle should (strive to) attain it's stated goal. If I invest in a fund that tracks bonds, then I expect it to track bonds. I didn't invest in a fund that said it would give me zero percent yield, I investe

I didn't read the whole article (out of free articles on bloomberg and I'm not going to jump through hoops to get around the paywall), but it seems like the premise of the article doesn't match the title here. It's not t

Is saying, "the mass consumer market remains value-conscious" just a polite way of saying that Indians don't feel like wasting their hard earned money when pirating is easy? Or is it that regular priced Netflix is a large eno

Julia is focused on numerical computing, not exclusively for numerical computing. Note that Julia has built in n-D arrays and useful operations, while Python requires the numpy package (or other similar package) for them. Julia's

I think this is a pretty good argument, and more correct that my previous comment. It's too late for me to edit that one, but it's a pretty clear argument. I doubt that any company would be willing to take the risk of creating a

Julia has raised millions of dollars in funding, and includes some pretty big names- National Science Foundation, DARPA, and a pretty big chunk from venture capital as well. They don't have a benevolent sponsor like Python has enjoyed

I agree that the wording of "allow you to interview" is pretentious, but the end result is commonplace. Successful Kaggle competitors score job interviews all the time because of their performance. Getting an interview is a two-

I would guess (I'm not a lawyer) that a commercial model would be in the clear as long as the company doesn't release anything including the data itself. Model weights that are derived from the data are not the data. I would make
