every once in a while i start thinking "it'd be really nice to build a declarative language to do this", but then I realize that: - that just means that I'm bored and would rather be writing out the logic to handle a mor

sure, you can find data and spin up your own db but you still need a tutorial to a) explain what the data/tables are and b) guide you through some things to build. for most programming languages you can make some sort of little widget

i love SQL but it was really hard to get started for two reasons: - it's hard to start tinkering unless you have a database to write queries against. most tutorials never really get past the most rudimentary hello-world-esque stuff b

What kind of consequences would a dev have for quitting early? I think you can do that at any job. The consequences are always about your next job and whether you can explain leaving a position quickly

I see two problems with bringing in your code for an interview: - I don’t know how long it took you to do it, and being able to do things in a reasonable amount of time is part of all jobs. Also, I don’t even know if you’re the one who wrot

In the US it’s context dependent. If you’re running low on diesel you’d say “I need to get some gas” and you’d get it from a gas station But if you’re talking about tractors saying that something has a “gas engine” specifically means it is

That’s how you, an experienced programmer, use it. What does this do to beginners that are just learning to program? Is this helping them by forcing them to become critical reviewers or harming them by being a bad role model?

I knew people in undergrad that could not add or multiply fractions— Something they should have learned at age nine. If somebody had the reading level of a 9yo, we wouldn’t give them a degree. But with math, we just let them through
