A calorie is not a subjective unit. A "clo" is by its definition. >one "clo" equals the thermal insulation required to keep a resting person (for instance, a couch potato) indefinitely comfortable at a temperature of

The "clo" seems problematic as a unit. I know people who dress in hoodies in 100 degree weather and don't break a sweat. I know others who are sweating in shorts in the winter. I put out a lot more heat than my wife and yet I

Here is the relevant part of my sieve rule. Just know that you can switch the :contains to :is this would make it so the localpart would have to match the sender domain exactly. I'd do this but I initially wasn't using the full dn

I raise cattle (one day for a living, but now a side job and for my enjoyment). Your read on the feed is very true for the feedlots, not trying to discredit that, because if you buy your beef from a feedlot than this is very much the case -

I have a catch-all setup so any email sent to my domain, that is not a registered email, goes to a specific account. Then I just create a new email for each site. I also use Sieve rules (Fastmail) to process emails. Each email address for a

Same, I have a green house. I have high tunnels and low tunnels too. They allow my family to grow nearly 100% of our plant needs year round. But I don't grow my grains in a tunnel or a house. I don't grow my pasture in one either.

Not to mention plants are peak "green energy". There is a very real irony to the indoor farming movement.

Likely all but untouched. 200 years ago Missouri was still wild. Where my land is has been clear cut. But about 10 miles up the road is a portion of the forest that they claim has never been logged. https://en.m.wikipedia.org

Anecdotal and only in reference to smaller herds, but my costs are significantly less. Cattle are free after the initial cost of cows and a bull. I feed hay December/January through April. Hay is $40 / bale and each bale is enough

I bought a horse because I was dating a farrier (horse manicurist) . We got married, bought a house, got chickens, then I stumbled into software development accidentally. I've been stumbling forwards in both software and farming ever s

I live in a national forest in the Ozarks. I read about the trappers and explorers and weep, thinking what I have missed by being born two hundred years too late.

I suspect similar results would come from manage grazing with most/any ruminant. We (ranchers in general) do not properly manage grazing. I think this is partially nearsighted capitalism, quick returns come from not allowing cattle to

Can't speak of non-american biomes, but in both Appalachia (VA) and the Ozarks (MO) I have personally seen similar results running cattle. The American ecosystems are all ideally and naturally adapt at thriving in the presence of rumin

It likely would if the same _practices_ were used. I run a dairy farm and homestead (in the modern sense of that word). These results are strikingly similar to what is seen in regenerative agriculture and what we have seen in practicing thi

I agree, 2007 is closer to the epicenter. However, I also think the shift away from social media and cell phones is rather uncommon. I have had no social media for almost a decade, but we are few and far between.

I love that zoning out from riding a road bike. I have some minor autism/adhd issues and riding a bike in one of the few times my mind doesn't go a mile a minute.

I actually don't mind mtb, at least from a danger issue. I'm even sort of decent at the sport, did it a lot in high school before I got into road. What I don't like about mtb is that it's not meditative. I can spin on a

I have been looking at gravel bikes. They seem like a good compromise. I live on an asphalt road, but there is a hundred or more miles of dirt forestry roads within a mile or two. Might be that a gravel bike can get me to and through the fo

In college I put in about 200 miles a week on my bicycle. After I got a fulltime job, got married, and had kids my mileage dropped to around 100 miles a week. I now live rurally the roads are exceptionally narrow and have 60mph speed limits

I get that, but that's poor design on the tool's part, not Python's problem. Hide your imports behind functions, don't import at the global level, unless it's needed globally.

I didn't understand this when it first came up and I still don't. If you want to defer your imports than wait until it's needed. It might be useful if you need to load a behemoth of a module for some rarely used part of a CLI

Yes that'd be quite a problem. Our cold lasts so little here that I've never had a need to start any of my tractors in the freezing, just wait a day and it's back to warm.

I live in the southern USA. So it makes sense that I have never heard of this. We had a -6°F night the other night but usually it'll freeze at night and be back above freezing by noon.
