I recently made the change from Macports to Ubuntu on VirtualBox. Things are much nicer now. My one tip would be to have any datafiles separate (ie not read/write files on the Mac filesystem directly - even though you can) and communicate b

The amount of energy we can usably harness from the sun is a lot less than is radiated to the earth. Its useful to drive at night and on cloudy days. People also demand similar performance from their future vehicles as they get now. If you'

It would be cool if this worked with noticable speedup. I am skeptical though because people have been looking at async chips for a long time but there hasn't been a revolution. The disadvantage of async chips is that subsystems become more

I've only been playing with it for a few months but I really like Scala. Its worth remembering when you look at the code that this is a compiled, statically typed, language running on the JVM. Its so easy to forget this because it feels lik

Mackay has an excellent (and very readable) book on-line which, despite its title, contains quite a lot of Bayesian statistics: http://www.inference.phy.cam.ac.uk/itprnn/book.html If that doesn't go deep enough into the statistical aspect

I'm playing with a web framework in C as a fun hobby thing just to see what's involved. My idea is to do everything as it shouldn't be done to see what turns out -- my inspiration for this is modern single speed bicycles which don't have ge

All I see is a timer and then just a black screen. I'm using Opera 9.64 on x86_64 Linux. I'm sad because the other comments make it sound awesome.

Very cool. I notice that you're using sbt to build. I'm using maven to build a scala project. I'd be very interested to know how sbt compares to maven if you have experience with both build systems.

I don't think the code metaphore is a good one. Its more like reverse engineering self duplicating and self healing nanotech hardware i.e. hardware so complex it can't be artificially designed with current understanding. The situation is ma

I'm enjoying my time with maven/jetty too. It was a steep learning curve but once it works its very smooth. I also recently substituted Java for Scala and can recommend that highly if you're doing the coding for the fun of it.

I consider the Unix command line to be my IDE too (I'm mostly a vim user). Just last night my plane was delayed due to heavy storms in Europe and as other peoples heavy laptops were running out of juice I still had hours left on my netbook.

At the time Java was first released and MFC was the most widely used OO framework, Java's standard library was like a breath of fresh air. OO has had a few different fashions since the first release of Java but, in my opinion, the base Java

The most accurate method I've used is "1 week per page". This is for backend development and not web design. Surely such an overly simple estimate is going to be wrong? Well yes, but reality is complex and no calculation is going to captur
