I am writing a toy lisp compiler as a learning experience. Its taking forever to get anywhere but I am finding the journey is more interesting than the destination. I'm trying the garbage collector for the second time. My first attempt

I like the C++ Primer (I actually prefer it to Stroudstrup) and this book does start from a basic example - describing what a function is. I think that using the Primer to learn programming would be a hellish experience but then learning C+

In my opinion, QTCreator is the one to beat at the moment. Its fast, simple and covers most of the IDE features for C++.

I forgot my PGP passphrase and can no longer sign Java packages in the Sonatype maven repository. This is not a big deal for me but I did try to recover my passphrase. I got an extension to John the Ripper that supports Gnu PGP keys and bui

If anyone is interested in the logistics of the cocaine trade I recommend the Dark Alliance book [1]. The book argues that when cocaine first appeared in the US it was not considered so dangerous or addictive and the authorities did not res

There is absolutely no reason not to use C++ in modern software development. Its nightmarishly complicated and gives you 1000 ways to blow your foot off, and maybe one or two to get the job done properly. After about 18 years of C++ devel

I haven't done any programming in Clojure for years but that looks really useful. It almost makes me want to start up Emacs and install Leiningen.

Calloc returns NULL on error - the program dies on access. I am not trying to win an argument here. I am genuinely interested in finding a good strategy to deal with memory allocation errors.

What should you do if calloc fails? Any solution I can think of requires an architecture that does not belong in a game.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. However, I still cannot see why this a national security problem. The ban on researchers attending conferences is for "national security" reasons. That's war talk.
