"(...) Rust feels more like Python than C. (...)" This feels like a very powerful assertion. Does the rest of the HN audience agree with this? If this is true, how long did it take?

So this would be the equivalent to the "how many pianists tuners live in New York?"

Same machine, investment was so big that my dad had to ask for a payroll advance from his boss, given I was struggling with Pascal (and my then computer was a Vic20). Turns out the boss had studied in the same college I was in, his answer

Before Django the gold standard for Python web apps was Zope. What a tremendous achievement by the Django team!

Yes, but it just implies that you cannot rely on grepping the source code. You know the relevant "method_missing" implementation is somewhere, and you can make an educated guess as where to look for it.

As a staunch defender of print-based debugging I guess this would be a lot more useful if this could be connected to a logging library.

It's the first debugging method one learns and always remains the last resort.

Was going the say the same, it's "Industrial" for me, but I've also heard the term referred to "Intelligent".

For a sufficiently big codebase, that is.

Also, this observation: in terms of developer time, compiled languages (a la Crystal, Go, Rust...) the disadvantage of compile time should be offset by much faster local test runs and even CI builds.

I'd say that they are easier to write code and to reason about when compared with, say, POSIX threads.

You just described the whole iOS value proposition. Even Macs are basically "set-up and forget". My dad, a 76 year-old with no computer chops, was always losing his track on his computer (my old Windows desktop). I became tired

I also happened to work in a very huge C++ project for the business logic component of a call center, using CORBA and the Reactor pattern from ACE to integrate different parts of the user / ACD / 1st agent / specialist /

FSM are the solution to a lot of coding problems that in the beginning just look like bunch of if..thens. Of course, there are a lot of problems that scream "FINITE STATE MACHINE" in their definition, but I'd say that apply

I'd say that it's not thinking too much -- your brain can't stop thinking! The issue is not being aware that you are thinking and that's what cognitive therapy, meditation and mindfulness is all about: being present whil

This is a great resource, and it's also well written. I did a lot of C thread programming 22 years ago (plus some CORBA), and this would have been very helpful, basically resumes a whole semester of university classes in one web page!

Fair point, let me try and ellaborate. Of course, time will tell. But the data science community fixation is on algorithms, not on languages. So you would need to build Tensorflow or Pytorch upon Nx, and you would need to migrate people

For this to gain traction needs to be adopted by the data-science community. It does not feel like that.
