CERN had a major role in making kicad what it is today. they implemented tons of complex stuff that you normally only find in really expensive CAD tools. Hope they can repeat that with a few more FOSS projects!

You may or may not be right about this. The only way to verify this is to install some system level firewall and carefully inspect all logs. Until you do that, we simple don't know.

Choose any "let's write an OS in Rust" project that has recently been featured on HN. Then try to follow it using the stable compiler (sudo apt install rustc) and see what happens. Maybe "work in progress" better de

We need Rust to mature a bit before we can do that. Everything looks great on surface but as soon as you start doing low level coding a lot of issues pop up and you need the nightly compiler and xargo and some undocumented library for the b

I think it's fair to say that in certain scenarios they are very useful. The original unikernel paper used a streaming media device as an example and the numbers they provided were really good.

Architecturally, microkernels and unikernels are direct opposites. Unikernels strive to minimize communication complexity (and size and footprint but that is not relevant to this discussion) by putting everything in the same address space.

Actual quote if you didn't find it: Eric Schmidt: "I would prefer that Omid do it verbally since I don’t want to create a paper trail over which we can be sued later? Not sure about this.. thanks Eric"

Because last time Google denied doing something like this it turned out there was a paper trail all the way to the CEO. (The top email basically said: why are you emailing me this. This is illegal. Don't create a paper trail!!)

Didn't Epic just made a similar announcement? Anyway, I wish more FOSS projects could copy blenders way of working. They start a very big and ambitious project then update the code to support it. For example Elephants Dream gave them c

A lot of rich common wealth Asians moved to Canada and created a similar situation x10. Then government created new laws to tax empty buildings. Did it solve the housing issue? Not entirely, but it sure helped a bit.

It is very annoying to have to explain to your boss why you have that game installed on your machine. Specially when his only IT experience is playing Candy Crush with his kids.

The "plumbing" is the same but they set it up slightly differently which in the end affects things like security. For example user mappings were handled very differently in lxc compared to (earlier versions of) docker. https:

For example LXC containers are unprivileged by default. If you escape the container you end up as a normal user on host, not root. LXC main dev is on HN. I'm sure he can explain this much better.

In reality, this was an attempt to turn Plan 9 into a commercial product. Plan 9 despite it's crazy UI (the shell and editor have been ported to Linux so some people must have liked it) brought a lot of new ideas which eventually found

Two minor remarks: 1. Docker is not synonymous with Linux containers. LXC for example has always had much better security than Docker despite using the same infrastructure. 2. You don't need to interface the kennel directly. There is f

The problem with this argument is that with a large enough company anything can be considered an anomaly and hence tolerable. "Jeff Bezoes killed his secretary and buried the body in his backyard? I bet one CEO somewhere in Iceland als

That is mainly marketing talk and had been disproved multiple times. For example Chinese hackers added hidden code to 34 legit apps totaling 500 millions downloads and Apple didn't notice a thing. https://www.macrumors.com&#

Yeah, that is the real question. Google already has special deals for companies that lowers the 30% fee significantly. (I think even 2-3% fee is too much for doing basically nothing, but that is another discussion).

I think they want to experiment rewriting some libraries in Rust to avoid things like stagefright in future. Pretty much what Mozilla did when Rust got more serious.
