You may be right on the absolute numbers. However, a) the HN readers that are most inclined to move from GoDaddy probably have control over more domains than the average person (either personal or via their responsibilities for their compa

I think there's a sizable audience out there that would like to use more FP but would also like to be able to integrate into their existing infrastructure. If you're already using Java it would seem much easier to sell "Hey, let's try Scal

Yeah, the undo is a bit strange -- in stock Emacs you have to make a change to the buffer to start undoing in the opposite direction. You can use "undo-only" for a simpler model, or check out some extensions that modify undo mode: http:/

Fanboyism implies a level of obsession or passion that is greater than just loyalty -- to the extent that you won't say anything bad about them at all, and will attack anyone that does.

Yeah, that's one thing that bothered me somewhat about the article: the implied assumption that any sort of consensual arrangement where the man is getting sex is by definition exploitative. If it were a young man getting paid by an older

These are good points (and there are other confounding factors, such as the fact that anybody taking part in the test would naturally be more familiar with block boarding). Nonetheless it seems like it might be worth trying out, as they do

Your thesis here is that Lisp itself was a limiting factor in AI research? What alternate language/direction would have resulted in substantially more progress?

It's a relative import -- where "relative" here is like relative vs. absolute paths. See: http://docs.python.org/tutorial/modules.html

I had almost the exact same setup, and ended up moving to a Macbook Air recently -- basically for a nice screen and a good trackpad. It's difficult to find decent screens in the sub-$500 price range.

Reading is more comfortable when the text is not sized to the entire screen (cite below, with more references). Also, witness the number of window managers that offer ways to facilitate half-window views (i.e., XMonad, Cinch or SizeUp, Win

Whenever I go through a toll bridge, I frequently pay the toll of the person behind me. I've sometimes wondered if it propagates backward at all. For the Starbucks card, I would love to live in a society where this could work. Unfortunatel

I wrote a little shim that allowed to write me to write Hadoop jobs in Clojure, and had two small test functions that would apply a map / reduce to a test file -- it made development of Hadoop jobs a bit easier. See: https://github.com/b

A proud moment for me was when my then-six-year-old daughter wrote a letter to Santa that said, "Dear Santa, I know that you can't exist because you would have to go faster than light to deliver all those presents." I don't know where she g

Exactly this. My web based usage of e-mail is down -- simply because I usually get my e-mail on my mobile phone. If anything, though, ease of access through mobile devices has increased my total usage of e-mail.
