There is nothing at all unethical about preventing the most intrusive and annoying advertising practices. Allowing advertisers to auto-play music is a terrible idea for publishers, because it damages our relationship, but we have to cope wi

I don't understand the distinction that you're making here...a lack of intergenerational transmission? Isn't all language at heart a personalized colloquial parlance? The contemporary world of highly codified standard interna

It's kind of weird to refer to the Ethiopian famine of the mid-1980s without reference to the Derg, the Red Terror, and the economic and political violence that caused it to happen. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1

Yes, the frustrating thing about the bike helmet debate is that it totally misrepresents the kind of safety gear that's important. I never wear a helmet, but I ALWAYS have reflectors, front and rear lights, a hat to keep the sun out of

Walking is pretty dangerous: you could be walking and spontaneously stumble, or slip on wet leaves, and clip your temple on a fire hydrant. That's it for you! Walking is quite dangerous, and is in fact has the highest rate of injuries

Folders are great. I started commuting with a full-size Dahon that I put under the seat, but now I think it's better to have a small folder and a fixed full-size bike rather than making a trade-off.

Transit and cycling are quite complementary. Transit and auto traffic are more at odds.

Helmets are still the best way to reduce a lot of head injuries among motorists. Cars travel at a much higher speed than pedestrians/bicycles, so it takes a lot more to dampen the injuries, and auto-related head injuries are simply mor

I suspect that bike-friendliness correlates with transit-friendliness. Most cyclists are proponents of transit diversity and multi-modal transport. And conservative states are more hostile to funding transit because it requires government s

Wearing a helmet would also improve the safety of people driving or walking around. But strangely we don't hear all the nagging lectures for people to wear a helmet when they are driving or walking to a corner store, whether or not it&

Of course, that covers a huge percentage of bicycle usage. I wear no helmet when commuting, but I'll wear a helmet in unusual conditions. Most cycling is done in fine weather in ordinary situations.

This is the single best argument I've ever seen for not wearing clip pedals. I always commute with flat pedals because it's easier and more convenient, but the safety issue has got to be huge.

Pretty nice article! The only thing I'd say is about your "extensibility" section. The value of this is a little abstract. After I learned programming Basic as a kid, I put it aside for a few years because I felt like I had &

The problem with wood as a fuel is that any densifying human culture can burn it faster than it grows. Industrial uses compete with household uses for cooking fuel and heating. Europe in the 14th to 16th centuries saw massive deforestation

Out in the grassland, 50 miles from any existing center, a farmland is indeed a more productive use of the hectare than paving it over and building an uninhabited-but-dense urban center there.

This is why it's important for cyclists to use the road network. Streets designated as bike routes are actually pretty great: quiet, easy to share, and connected to the road network. Bike lanes are more important on more arterial roads
