You're missing the point. I don't care about karma. I said I was in the top 10 to establish that hey, I'm not some random guy, I've been here since the beginning and contributed enough to actually matter, and so therefore when I say HN h

You're right. I'm not quite sure why I felt so strongly negative just then. I think it's because capping downvoting to -4 is still too low. I really wish downvoting was capped at 0. That way, comments still get filtered to the bottom, bu

What a strange fear -- being afraid of not having health insurance. I haven't had a "real job" or health insurance for about a year now, and I don't care at all. If something bad happens to me, I'll put the bill on my credit cards. I dou

So if I made a webapp "Cats On Keyboards", which displays pictures of wonderfully cute kitties blissfully sleeping on keyboards, then that would be HN material? Don't think so.

Can we get this crap off HN? Please? It's just sad that the current #1 story is one about people having sex. And not even anything intellectually interesting about sex. Just "there are people having sex". Um... Great?

But I don't see why detail is bad. Too much detail is bad because it hides the relevant knowledge. That is, there are certain paragraphs / certain images that the programmer will remember. Those are the important components. Brevity is

You sound like you've worked on physics simulations. Care to elaborate? That sounds interesting.

That is a very good point. Every C/C++ developer should be familiar with #pragma pack (Visual Studio... not sure what the GCC equivalent is).

Man, you are reading way way too far into what I said. Aren't introverts like us supposed to always be taking statements at face value? And isn't what I said true? Attacks like "algorithms junkie", and completely shoving words into my

Keep in mind that 99% of the time, choice of algorithm determines your code's performance way more than worrying about cache lines.

Heh. You know, there's probably nothing wrong with having a recommendation engine for Hacker News. After all, the frontpage is still the frontpage, so people can use the recommendation engine without it degrading the quality of the site,

"Explaining Benford's Law" may have been a more accurate title, but "Why 30.1% of numbers start with 1" brought this neat article to a larger audience. Taken too far, though, that kind of thing can ruin social news sites. Headlines have a

I wish the source code was cross-platform. It doesn't build in Visual Studio. 'erand48': identifier not found 'M_PI' : undeclared identifier Obviously #define M_PI 3.1415926 should do the trick, but I need to track down an erand48
