I already explained exactly why the algorithm has no real world application. The burden of proof is now on you. And until you do, I maintain the challenge was completely invalid.

I understand what you're trying to say. I'm even close friends with someone whose skill level I'd call Carmack-like (an assessment I made, as a professional graphics programmer, over the course of two years). Your point is a good one, but n

How do you know the problem doesn't exist? Because the problem applies primarily to realtime 3D / 2D graphics, of which I have spent the last 7 years learning about. That is of course not a guarantee the problem does not exist, but it is

It's invalid because the paper was presented to solve a problem which does not exist . Maybe it can be applied to some other problem using similar theory, but the problem it presents would basically never have to be solved in linear time.

Yes, yes. But the original challenge is invalid. I asserted that I could implement 99% of algorithms I came across for practical real-world problems , not 99% of all algorithms. I gave a solution that solves the problem . The problem i

Notice the Author (Amber) is the same as the submitter (Amber)? That's kind of a cheap point to make. There's absolutely nothing wrong with an author submitting their own blog post to the site to get feedback.

Skimming over the paper, the goal appears to be "convert an arbitrary closed concave polygon into a set of triangles in linear time". Disregarding the "linear time" part, there is a standard way to accomplish this goal: - the polygon can be

At this point, I have >10 years of programming experience. I've been programming for the majority of my childhood and the entirety of my adult life. I don't like to overestimate my own abilities, and I wish I could prove to you that m

Wow. It's so strange to realize how incredibly massive the field of mathematics is. As a software developer, there isn't a single programming concept / architecture / algorithm / etc that I can't learn in less than a day. (Edit: of course

You need to take a break from software development for about 6 months. Really. About 1.5 years ago, I was in almost exactly the same state of mind that you're currently in. So I quit my job and lived off of savings for a few months. I pla

Could some math expert (cperciva?) read the paper, read this blog post, and tell us the results?

Proved was the wrong choice. Implicated is probably more accurate. But really, there was some article very recently that made all the same points.

Okay but that right there is where people discriminate. Unintentional or not, it's still discrimination. Just because a person or idea is "old" does not make it somehow inherently negative. If you have to comment on age to argue against som

Just because their ideas are different than yours, and they happen to be old, you call them "crustaceans"? Am I correctly reading what you wrote?

We all know exercise is your best shot at having a healthy heart, a strong immune system, and maybe even a 100th birthday party. Wasn't this just recently proved false (here on HN)? The sentence may as well read "We all know the sun orbit

Man. The web was barely used in 1991, which seems very not-that-long-ago. I was born in 1988, so it's strange to me to imagine life without the web. I eventually want to be in an environment where I'm surrounded by the grandmasters of those

Right on. It looks like you've done your homework (which is expected with the YC pedigree) so all that remains is: good luck to you! Supporting Android does seem very significant.

Who would give their 8-12 year old an iPhone 3GS / iPhone 4? Or rather, is that market big enough? Maybe eventually, but this seems almost premature.

Ugh, their response: This is an intentional change. Prior to the HTML5 parsing algorithm, browsers backtracked and reparsed when seeing an EOF inside a script to deal with </script> inside an inline script. This means that prior to

Haha. That is amazing. I thought "Bioethics attracts all the weirdos who want to propose really off the wall crazy crap" until I read that list. People actually get paid to write stuff like that?
