If you want to learn low-level programming but aren't really enticed by networking / operating system hacking, I'd recommend writing a software rasterizer. It's a fun project, and it's satisfying at a visceral level to see your creation

Strangely, the two posts are slightly different. (The screenshots are different, for example.)

So... What about security? Would it unlock the door if I captured packets sent by the phone, then replayed them later? (Would that be difficult to do? I've never done it.)

If a file is encrypted, then that encrypted file can be duplicated. I don't understand your point. The encryption process doesn't result in one giant blob of data. It results in N blobs, where N is the number of files you store in Dropbox

I had no idea that there was a "Links". I thought he meant "Lynx", but misspelled it. Now I want to write an operating system and name it "Debyan".

It was tongue-in-cheek. I think it's silly that Microsoft adds "_s" to a lot of the standard functions; it makes porting more difficult. Of course, it was sillier not to write "strcpy" as strcpy(dest, maxSize, src) from the beginning. And "

How did you get a free Pre 2? I've been chomping at the bit to develop for anything besides my iPhone. I just can't afford any new phone right now.

You need to know the current block chain in order to know that nobody is fooling your client. In other words, you need to know the current block chain in order to be sure you really did just receive 100BTC from Website X, and that it wa

Why? Not only do people continue to use AIM -- entire companies use AIM. The last two game studios I worked at mandated this. Everyone in the company either already used AIM, or created a new account with the company initials as a prefix

Local Storage is limited to 5MB. Bitcoin requires much more than that --- on the order of 500MB. This is because it needs to verify the block chain history, in order to provide cryptographically secure transactions.

I'd encourage everyone to read Einstein's book on relativity: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/315/books/Albert%20Einstein/Albert%2... His writing style is beautifully simple and the content is therefore easy for anyone to read and understand.

What I'm saying is, if people decide to donate their own money to charity, then that's fine. But I don't understand the attitude of "It's noble to steal money from some, and redistribute it to others". It seems immoral.

Er. Why should the bottom 20% of society be "taken care of"? Is it because we're afraid they'll turn into criminals if we don't? Because that would be equivalent to paying off the mob. Honest question.

Do you have any plans for how to handle Bitcoin eventually being made illegal in the US? Or the other side of the coin --- Bitcoin being devalued when the "miners" sell off thousands of Bitcoins (to cash out)? It's kind of interesting to th
