I wonder if switching to a new keyboard layout is easier for people who are already used to switching between layouts (I use both Azerty and Qwerty), like it's easier for someone bilingual to learn a new language.

It's just a whole different philosophy. If the bad guys don't feel threatened by the people they rob, they will be less likely to use force against them. If we hear a burglar in our home, we europeans tend to hide and call the pol

I quit twitter altogether. Never felt better. I'm worried HN has replaced it though.

This app would be illegal in France. It's illegal to have a database of people without letting these people see, modify and destroy their profiles. Doesn't any such law exist in the US?

I wonder if this guy realizes his teeth are going to fall off. Since he has very little chewing action, the gums and underlying bone are going to go soft and eventually the teeth are going to begin falling off. But who cares, right? He does

You are correct. It's not because you use a fallacy in your discourse that you are wrong. "The fallacy fallacy: You presumed that because a claim has been poorly argued, or a fallacy has been made, that the claim itself must be wrong."

Good job, your charts look really good. Too bad they aren't interactive, it makes the legend+values mandatory to understand the data. Unless you just want to use them as art. Also, the pie chart and doughnut charts seem odd. The general rul

That sounds like a pretty good reason not to make those globals. We did it when we realized 100% of our modules had those three dependencies. Haven't found a drawback yet.

This comment has nothing to do with Backbone but we tend to use the sugar syntax for defines: define(function(require){ var whatever = require('dependency'); }); instead of define([ 'dependency', ], function(whatever) { }); We do this

Not true because if the profits aren't high enough, you won't be able to pay these workers enough money for it to be interesting to them. If you can make 2 cents/hour by employing someone, that doesn't mean someone will accept the job. Peop

Not a question but thanks a lot! I've been writing backbone applications for more than a year and I still learned a couple things thanks to your rundown. Also I'm totally going to use this to teach BB to my next recruits.

It's completely true that Backbone is somewhere in the middle. It's a light framework to make things more modularized and maintainable in a somewhat large javascript application. Of course you can make things even better for very large java

These were cool and useful when javascript was hard to learn and each browser had a different version of it. Now it's one of the most widespread programming language in the world and there are thousands of great tutorials to learn it. Take

Don't listen to them OzzyB. Your to-do list app is really going to be revolutionary. ;)

I think this parody is right on. The app.net pitch is all about the fact there is a fee. Why not build a cool app, ask for a fee and _then_ explain the reason for the fee?

Am I the only one seeing this app as a white-hate trojan horse on mobile? By installing the app, you enable MightyText to take your SMS and send SMS in your name. You have to trust them. This smells like danger to me.

I really don't think IM and SMS-like messaging is the same. IM is real-time and synchronous. The great thing about SMS is the asynchronous nature of the conversations. What's even cooler about iMessage and Whatsapp is that the conversations

Yep, me too! Would it be possible to use this as a standalone (command line for instance) and not a plugin?

The problem is that the user has no tactile feedback. It could quickly become very painful to hold one's hand/arm over the device. Maybe they should orient the device toward the table and transform it into a virtual trackpad.

They don't specify if it's the latest version of macbook air. I would need a guarantee that when a new mba release is out, they will update all their servers.

What do you mean by "serious about programming"? Can a web developer be serious about programming? Assembly is a waste of time for them.
