Pretty hard to call Nixon a small-government conservative. He was the last of the Rockefeller Republicans (counting Ford as part of his administration). Some Nixon Admin policies: -Nominating Warren Burger and Harry Blackmun to the Supreme

Trying to replicate may be the biggest problem with education. LeBron grew up in Akron. He knows the problems these kids are facing, and he's going out of his way to solve it specifically for them. That kind of local leadership combine

Even as the gap between the rich and everyone else widens, the quality of life for the bottom 99 percent has vastly changed since 1928. This makes me wonder how much people care. In a global economy where the 1% are investing in markets t

I feel like unions really missed the boat on this one. Maybe I don't know union history well enough, but it seems like the UAW should have made large equity stakes in Ford, GM and Chrysler (or the equivalent historical companies) impor

I agree with this. Every offer I've gotten from an early-stage startup was market salary and <1% equity, often when I was engineering hire 1-5. I had conversations with founders and told them that if they couldn't meet my marke

I'm not sure how many degrees of separation this knowledge is from programming, but it's got to be one of the highest values I've ever seen on HN. Bravo.

Maybe, but how much overvaluation is there? $100 billion? $500 billion? There needs to be trillions of dollars of overvaluation and a huge amount of leverage to constitute a financial crisis. I'm open to being wrong, but I don't s

I'm not sure how you interpreted my comment, but I'm partially agreeing with you. "Tax the rich" never works out that way, since it's mostly people at the very bottom of the upper class paying most of the taxes. The

Love this. I can't see a specific bubble yet. As someone in the tech industry, I'm tempted to say startups, but while the latest batch of IPOs seem underwhelming, none of them seem like out-and-out dotcom-style failures. SnapChat,

I agree with this. Folks earning $200k-$500k are paying most of the taxes because they have little-to-no political influence, and they're easy scapegoats because most people make less than them. This is the glass ceiling of the US tax
