I like this question! I think that working in constrained environments early in my career gave me lasting instincts both for efficiency and maintainability/sustainability. I wrote a lot of code on Win16, GeoOS, Epoc32, and a variety of

Always, but with regards to writing clean code, it pays to just learn how to do this upfront. An analogy is of cooking. I used to be a very messy cook, the food is just as good, but when I was done the kitchen looked like a bomb had hit it.

The NT team had the advantage that they (Cutler et al) had worked on a previous OS and had the opportunity to revisit design decisions in many places. I have no idea if/how VMS solved this problem

This is why the drug companies love biologics so much. The patent can expire, but without access to the cell line that produces the drug, it can't be relocated. An equivalent cell line would have to go through clinical trials. Humira i

Ha! I guess I'm showing my age. There used to be an associated vulnerability, which is why some frameworks won't let you do it. It appears that the vulnerability was fixed in what are now fairly old versions of browsers. More info

My path, with an allegedly irrelevant degree (History and Philosophy of Science) was 1) tinker with computers as a kid 2) go to university and study something I wanted to learn about, randomly learning C in passing (from a friend and a stol

On an unrelated note. If human readability isn't a primary concern, I'd recommend requiring that < > & all be escaped, this prevents some crappy attacks Also, no top level lists!

Yeah, as with the trailing zero, you're being burned by JavaScript's decision to just have a Number type. As far as js is concerned 1 and 1.0 are the same number.

While YMMV, from a patients perspective, with severe psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, you want to get to biologics as quickly as your healthcare system (or budget if you have fu money) will allow. Insurance companies love methotrexate bec

Forgive the nitpick, but it is "make do", if only because "make due" reads very awkwardly in British English where "due" is pronounced as if it is spelled with a U and an E, not as if it is spelled with two O&#

Back when EMACS stood for Eight Megs And Constantly Swapping. It's salutary to consider that the memory for a reasonably spec'd machine a little over 20 years ago is now a rounding error I remember at about that time having 80MiB

I feel that you are being intentionally obtuse. The article is about sail theory, and as such it is entirely reasonable to consider the sail in isolation.

As with all things, it depends on what someone is prepared to pay. It seems unlikely that Amazon is overly concerned about the domain name (Disclosure: I work at Amazon on the totally unrelated product "Go")

Absolutely agree. As you get further into a project you tend to need subtler tools. But for the rough work when starting out, my preference is to be stricter, which can be relaxed as necessary, rather than starting out lax and reaching a po
