EXPLAIN is almost useless on mysql, but very helpful in postgres. EXPLAIN is a very useful command once you have some degree of success (users).

I hope Libra (the new currency from FB) will set a higher bar. I can confirm that PayPal is horrible to legitimate merchants. One would expect better fraud protection given the high fees they charge. I never expected they would simply “fr

Kobalt build tool uses a Kotlin DSL (typed language) and lets you establish dependencies between files in a straightforward way. It currently only supports java and kotlin jvm projects but it meets your criteria. https://beust.c

Spring boot still requires gradle, which is much more complex than naive use of npm or python pip. In the long run java build tools are better, but due to the learning curve a lot of folks balk (leave) and use a different stack. Whoever is

As a recent parent, view makes a lot of sense to me. Two weeks of parental leave is absolutely insufficient. There are probably a lot of other variables at play but Norway, which I’m sure encourages women to enter ‘male’ lines of work has

For most countries, paying their debt is just table stakes (not paying their debt is not an option). That doesn’t give them leverage to print money inflation-free. What allows the US to do it is the USD’s status as the leading global reserv

Kotlin multi-platform also reuses native Widgets/UI but the DX doesn’t seem very polished yet. Does something like this exist in Crystal-lang or Nim? Using native widgets to do cross-platform is appealing, but C++ ...?

It is particularly unfortunate that ansible uses yaml because if infrastructure is going to be code, some day you will surely want to refactor.

Kotlin solves this problem nicely, assuming your codebase is all new or has been annotated with @Nullable/@NotNull https://kotlinlang.org/docs/reference/null-safety.html

How does Fly compare to the forgotten grandfather of serverless ... Google App Engine? Edit: just read that GAE only runs apps in one region [1]. That’s odd because it seems one benefit of tying an app to GAE’s cloud storage API would be t

This opens up the possibility of making something akin to niffy [1], which offers a sane/easy way to automate UI testing. Unfortunately, in the case of Android apps you wouldn't have css selectors to simplify simulation of clicks

Good points. If you go back to java development and want to try a fringe build system, Kobalt is nice and straight-forward compared to maven/gradle. You configure the project in a kotlin file using a DSL. You may never need a plugin

I will use PHP 7.2 on projects I maintain. However, starting a web project with Kotlin in 2017 has a minimally larger set-up cost (have to understand gradle or kobalt) than PHP, but is definitely a better option. Check out http4k or ktor a

If you access a memory location beyond the end of the string, you can get all sorts of unexpected behavior. The string's length is something you'll pretty much always need to take into account.
