I've had multiple bugs based on whitespace being significant. A C-descended language which had braces around the block would not have had the bug at all. Another problem with it is that I can't just comment out, say, an if, and have the cod

I would like to have a million. Two, if I could get it... three I wouldn't turn down either. I have defined two very specific and (not too horribly) lavish goals: have $0.00 month-to-month debt and to own a house with some acreage in the Am

I have no idea. It's not the definition of "dignified existence in the US" for anyone I respect, that's for sure.

I have a mathematics minor as part of my bachelor's in computer science. I have never once regretted my mathematics training. I sometimes wish I had more.

Unfortunately, yes, sorta. What most science is about is building a mathematical model of the thing under description. As software engineers, we know that models and other abstractions break down around the edges, especially when the abstra

Agreed. The author seems to have a very bean-counter attitude towards things; I think he is saying, if it's not immediately making money, or can't be shown to be immediately making money, axe it! Real innovation is so radical there is no bu

I personally really like the idea of the duplicate detector. I didn't realize it was going on. I really don't want to see conversation split across threads; I'd rather have one conversation per link. my 0.02 c

Programmers.SE is the soft questions relating to programming life and career, basically. It's much more relaxed about discussiony questions than SO. I participate there regularly.

It's a bit girly for most of the lady engineers I see around. But, then, it's Barbie. The definition of girly. I'm glad it's at least there tho.

I'm thinking, you know, there used to be complaints about vi being an operating system with a lousy text editor. Oh, wait, that was emacs, wasn't it. Hmmmm.

Nah. Sorry man, but this list is so tilted towards the web-app world it's more than a bit ridiculous. For an genuinely deep understanding, start at the gate/transistor level and move up the stack. Here is a list which will hit major portion

Cable is on its way out. Maybe not today, maybe not next year, maybe not in five years. But it is surpassed and supplanted by the Internet. Movies, news and TV shows will continue, and online pricing will, in the course of time, adjust to r

Safe is not a good word for rebase. It's a tool, and a fairly sharp double-edged one at that. Use with care.

Tastebuds totally does not connote music dating to me, it connotes a foodie site. I really had a moment of mental dissonance there. It's a nice short name, easy to remember and spell, but I'm not feeling the connotations. /my 0.02 cents.

Restated, the author's argument is as follows: -- Twitter is a subset of Facebook for the purpose of communicating with real life friends. Facebook does the job better, too. -- For other purposes, Twitter gains in value, but not a lot.

Python is currently Very Popular. I'm not a fan, but the popularity does give you access to lots of docs and help. I would suggest C# is a good language for starting on Windows. It's popular, widely supported, and doggone easy to write GUI
