Have you considered there might be a reason for that? That kind of "100% personal freedom, no government telling me what to do" libertarianism is impossible nonsense. It would exist for about three seconds before people realized t

Walking around barefoot is just a New Zealand culture thing. I make a decent software engineer salary and own shoes and I still walk around barefoot in public a lot because I like it more and it's socially acceptable. Someone got kicke

Try working for any large organization public or private. There's not much difference. "The Government" is effectively equivalent to hundreds of separately run companies as well, some of them are bureaucratic/ineffecti

Yeah I'm kinda the same. I stick around because interesting/useful stuff gets posted here, and the discussion is mostly also interesting/useful. But some days I wonder if I really want to hang around in a space where comments

It depends on the topic, with posts that are mostly about technical stuff (which of course is most things that get posted on HN) there's generally no hint of any of that. But when anything gets posted that can be linked to race, or cel

They're pretty darn good for laptop GPUs . This isn't really an Apple specific problem - GPUs with low power budgets are never going to beat GPUs intended to permanently run off of wall power. (I know there's stuff like th

I suspect the reality is that preventing illegal gambling via enforcement would be basically impossible to do effectively without spending a significant portion of the police budget on it. Allowing heavily regulated legal gambling is more l

I doubt that was really the intent. Back then so many people smoked, and cigarettes were so "normal" that not putting them in rations would probably be akin to not giving people coffee today.

The "if you get 3/5 you're doing fine" thing only works if you actually give As for 3/5 answers. Otherwise no amount of placation is going to make students ignore reality.

The population of California is ~ half that of France, and presumably California sells power to neighbouring states too, so it doesn't seem that out of whack.

The extra vertical space is better for reading stuff, and looking at code. It also allows for smaller laptops with the same usable screen space - they don't need to be as wide.

On the screen - after using 3:2 and 16:9 laptops, I'll never go back to 16:9 again, so it's a definite deal breaker for me.

Imo good software engineering === minimizing effort. More specifically: * Minimizing effort in both the short and the long term (biased towards the long term because it's... longer). * Minimizing effort as long as product quality is t

Well, no. But you can write your backend in JS/TS. I find backend code needs much less of a "framework" anyway (depending on use case, I'm thinking of CRUDdy-ish stuff). You just need to nail the API between frontend and
