I think the “us vs them” mentality is too strong here. Don’t you think these billionaires are just as against each other (if not more so) than against the common man?

The opposite is true - transportation has increased diversity. The American Indians suffered due to a lack of exposure to diseases (smallpox) common in Europe due to their relative isolation

I imagine that (at least for the foreseeable future) genetic engineering will only be targeted to modifying SNPs (and other mutations) that unambiguously cause diseases.

I think it’s the former. Not wearing corrective lenses (glasses or contacts) when needed causes additional eye strain.

That’s an extreme comparison - there’s no such thing as a healthy level of cigarette consumption while there is for social media (at least a non-harmful level).

Plot.ly now has Dash, which is RShiny for Python (which uses Flask) and appears equally capable to RShiny.

What an irritating article. If you do anything pleasurable you don't normally do in the morning (like eating ice cream for breakfast) you're likely going to be in a better mood. What happens when someone eats ice cream every day?

It doesn't take much time to be equally comfortable with vim/emacs as you are with your normal editor. Anything you learn after that is a bonus. It's hard to say how much faster I am using vim than a normal editor, but I'

What about fish? I use it on the terminal but still write my shell scripts in bash so they work across systems (including windows with minGW). I think a big issue with new shell adoption is the prevalence of bash basically everywhere.

I don't think this is a good idea. There are many high school graduates that are woefully unprepared for college. It will be a huge waste of time and resources. No point of throwing students in the deep end and let them sink or swim.

I smiled as I read it and took it to be a joke, but it might do the writer some good to be a little less subtle here. Admittedly I'm not very tall myself.

Is there a reason you decided to single out the NYT at the end of your post? Is it due to its frequency of its reference here on HN? I like your idea of archiving and summarizing articles you find interesting and meaningful. I've thoug

The time it would take to port code from 2 to 3 would likely be less than the time it would take to port to another language. And using the scipy stack makes numerical computing incredibly fast (fast enough for me considering it takes me lo

I believe money is definitely a big part of it. If you have the skills needed to help manage and analyze "big" data (big as in too big to realistically handle in Excel, which is the limit of most biologists), you can easily earn

Sometimes I work at home and hook my laptop up to my keyboard, mouse, monitor, and outlet at the same time. Admittedly I don't do this very often but it's nice to be able to do this as I need to.
