Just to segway a little I am a fan of lxc. I would be happier fiddling with PHP in a container than the main os. I run lxc containers and PHP on another box and run sublime seemlessly on the remote box to edit code.

I think you need to be a bit tougher. I am also a sysadmin with a sideline SAAS project. I could have bought a house with the money the SAAS project has made. Developers have still made fun of my stack and made fun of me when turning up to

I am guessing back end work and dealing with performance issues is causing stress? If this is the case fixing the back end team will help. It also sounds like you are worrying too much about what management thinks. They will let you know qu

My wife and I's families did the best for us growing up but a lack of money, alcoholism and our parents having a rough time growing up meant growing up for us maybe wasn't what it could have been. My wife and I now have the most w

I try to tithe, or give away, 10% of my earnings. The Bible teaches tithing as good practice. For me the 10% is just a guide. The money I give away is split between my church and individuals/organisations working with the poor. I must

I run test environments for my saas products, gitlab and nextcloud on a dual core box, hp dc7900, in my roofspace. The os is running of an ssd and there are two old metal disks in software raid. All my business backups go to the same box. I

My view is shaped by the bible which teaches us to enjoy what we have, not covet what others have and to remember the poor. If you can master these three things I believe you will have more peace in your own mind and will help others along

Are you being too nice not posting a link (or maybe you have a technical reason)? I was a little hurt when a friend said I wouldn’t be a good business man as I wasn’t cut throat enough. My friend wasn’t being entirely wise but there was a l

Grumpy old sysadmin says that datacenters used to cause downtime, now it's dodgey deployments and kubernetes abusing dns as well as requiring more certificates than a small isp.

Funny you mention power as it was on my mind recently. The box hits 60w at full use so it is not a major concern. I would be more concerned leaving a laptop power supply on 24/7. I’m not sure if my concern is unfounded, what do you thi
