Self hosting at home - what is higher risk? Your HDD dying or losing Gmail account? Oh now you don’t only self host, now you have to have space to keep gear, plan backups, install updates, oh would be good to test updates so some bug doesn’

I think few cents do represent it. Production alone per piece is more like really small fraction of a cent.

And when you had to update version and pay new version license you got push back from bean counters, because current runs fine - and bean counters didn’t like to hear now we have to pay 10x or 100x because no one wanted to spend money on in

Also how common sense can exist with LLM? There is no common sense with it - it is just an illusion.

Lots of those „prompt engineering” things would be nice to teach to business people as they seem to lack common sense. Like writing out clear requirements.

I build web applications that run on top of databases, web servers and frameworks. I do need to understand how indexes in db engine work, I need to understand there might be socket exhaustion in the system, I do need to understand how my fr

I have different experience - usually it is tech people that are toxic and trying to prove candidates are stupid because they didn’t know that one thing person asking lives by and is his bread and butter. It is like they are never intereste

Parent was nagging that “tech” is somehow stuck on the notion people are of a fixed mindset and was writing like it wasn’t true, because devs would somehow be different - or himself for sure.

I have seen enough devs being corporate drones and people who say they want to learn but do nothing to be tilting towards “fixed mindset”. I do have myself as a counter example but that’s small N and as usual always others are lazy ;)

Well basic markdown is super useful to do stuff quickly. Problem is when people started to build systems upon systems upon something that should not be used for more complicated cases. Maybe not a problem because I don't care but I jus

When someone is fixing it in postprod most of complexity of the initial shot is gone never to be seen again. It is not like they fix some colors on the scene and then last scene of the movie suddenly changes to something different :D

Bad part is all those guys attending meetings start feeling important. They start feeling like they are doing the job. I’ve seen those guys it is painful to watch.

I don’t see too much time spent to respond. I have above average hardware but nothing ultra fancy and I get decent response times from something like LLAMA 3.x. Maybe I am just happy with not instant replies but from online models O do not

You still can get decent stuff out of local ones. Mostly I use it for testing tools and integrations via API not to spend money on subscriptions. When I see something working I switch it to proprietary one to get best results.
