The SOP is definitely to get away with anything until you get caught but everyone was looking at what everyone else was doing as an example of what could be done. I worked (past tense) for a much smaller FB game company. The two complianc

Kudos. The presentation is pretty good. I've had a similar idea rattling around in my head for a few years, but haven't had the time to build it... There's a major problem with all these sites that has yet to be solved. What that is is le

A former employer (and this is one of the many reasons I don't work there any more) was well aware of this and took advantage of it all the time. Just to give one example, their 404 error was a page of ads...

Old school! Back in the 90's I worked with someone who still used NEWS as his desktop window manager (it was written in postscript...)

I'm sure they use a CDN for delivery of the flash assets. The flash is still most likely updated several times a day. We used to batch commands in the client and submit every 6 seconds. It was still a crazy number of writes, because basic

Yeah, srsly. Decent indie effort but check out the Epic Citadel iphone demo for what can be done on a small scale and ANY pc game made in the last year or so for what can be done by a real game developer for real customers who actually spen

It was no fun when I REALLY learned how to program, it was pure panic. I was half way through a CS degree and got a summer job, and I just had get it done no matter what so I beat my head against the problems and solved them. After that,

I haven't watched the talk yet, but it's quite possible that having more sysadmins is what allows them to use 40 servers. One guy might have needed 80 servers to accomplish the same work because he's too busy to optimize anything. :)

My comments were mostly "meta". There has been a rash of entrepreneur bs here lately and I'm sick of it. I much prefer the NoSQL posts. However. To get to the meat of your post, I have personally (meaning, in my personal life) encounter

If financial success isn't your goal in doing what you do then I'm wrong and I apologize. My career is about code. My life "beyond it" is not about "business" and it's quite happy, thank you very much. That's the last thing I care about
