There seems to be a misunderstanding of the word algorithm here. "Algorithm" refers to a set of instructions/operations that do not necessarily occur on a computer. You may know non-computer algorithms as "routines"

Why not just offload static resources to a CDN and cache dynamic content so as little work is done as possible? I can see how flat-files are good for completely static sites like blogs, but that seems more like a corner case.

Piwik is a nice self-hosted alternative to Google Analytics. We've used it for several projects and it works pretty well.
