Exactly. It's a great article, but the depressing part is that there's a very limited catalog of legal media available to use these services with (except for immich, I suppose). For games, there's GOG. Good luck finding bigge

It is worse than Google at some queries, but for me that's a tiny fraction of my total searches. I usually only use Google if I need local results / Google Maps. What makes Kagi great is that they let you customize results. I'

Yes. I like _writing_ because it's an effective way of learning (at least for me), since explaining something is very different than "just" doing something. I don't track visitors/analytics on my blog, so I don'

Not assuming you’re serious, but in any case: the reason is the JVM (+ Scala) ecosystem in the data space.

I’m the author, but posting as a private individual here, these being just my options and all that… but I can shed some more light on why I did move us to Superset. Preset is great, as are most of these tools’ hosted versions! Lots of great

Author here. This decision went through all proper architecture channels, including talks with our engineers, proof of concepts and the like. I’ve been doing this too long to shoehorn in my pet languages if I didn’t think they’re a good fit

We use nix at work. I'm not a huge fan - I find it too opinionated. Appreciate it for what it is, though, and understand its fans. Since at $work, we run K8s + containers in some shape or form (as well as in... basically all previous j

Author here. Bitwarden (as much as I appreciate them!) isn't something I self host, since it’s too critical an application for me (similar to email). I pay for 1Password.

While I’m not usually on board with gatekeeping, this field already struggles with a huge amount of very non-technical folks and their respective managers, producing overall mediocre results and giving the profession a bad rep, to the point

Respectfully, I don't think this articles uses monads correctly, because it's not using any. This could be very elegant: getUser: Option[User] getFriends(u: User): Seq[Friend] bestFriends(f: Seq[Friend]): Seq[Friend] ren

I despise this "entitlement" argument. Just because other people have it worse doesn't mean criticism of people who have it better is invalid. Historically, violent conflicts notwithstanding, only people in already relatively

I agree. Scala is actually usable for real-world use cases on a much broader scale, simply by virtue of being on the JVM. I wrapped some of the (unergonimic-because-code-gen'd) AWS libraries in cats-effect just the other day, matter of

I own a small acreage in north GA, which is part of a former timber plantation. About 10 acres are nothing but densely packed southern pine monoculture. My neighbor has another 15 or so acres of pure pine adjacent to it, also rows and rows

I think you’re describing FP in general here. I, too, am a fan, especially in data intense applications, where a clear / decoupled data model and aggressive compiler solve many headaches.

The biggest difference is that using something non-privacy-conscious (like Google Maps) doesn't have an immediate impact on my insurance bills. It also doesn't have access to my ODB-2 data and I can turn it off. iOS allows me to s

I've both worked on systems like that professionally and built some myself just for fun to play with GPS/geospatial data/streaming etc (fun tech). I'd _never_ want something like that installed in my vehicle. First off,

You can measure distances natively in QGIS, the symbol looks like a ruler. Adding permanent points requires adding a layer, e.g. a shapefile of points. That being said, as I've outlined in the article, I certainly haven't properly
