Reminds me of Stephen Glass [1], the reporter who fabricated entire events and wrote about them in The New Republic, as well as the movie Catfish [2]. 1: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fabulist 2: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catfish_

I would say 43 million dollars is quite cheap to get a whole continent. It is not unlikely that it would've been more dangerous and more costly to do it themselves.

Sounds similar to Pierce's thoughts on pragmat{i|ici}sm: Consider what effects, that might conceivably have practical bearings, you conceive the objects of your conception to have. Then, your conception of those effects is the whole of you

I didn't mean to imply that you couldn't - it was meant as a general statement of people in a similar position, though my writing didn't really make that clear.

Here's the beauty of this system: you're becoming a local authority on these topics, but your (and probably many other people's) authority is patio11. What does this mean? At least two things: 1) History will probably remember patio11 as

Maybe it will, maybe it won't. I think one important question to ask oneself is this: would I - in any way - like to be a part of making Facebook a real force to be reckoned with? I don't mind Google, Amazon, Apple or Twitter (much). I do

When you said infinite scrolling, I assume you mean content that keeps getting added as you go further down the page (Facebook-style)? In that case I agree with you, but when it comes to articles the whole article could just as well be load

You are right that I don't fully understand the implications, all I know is that such products are extremely dangerous unless you compose them carefully (iron butterfly, straddle, collar! - whatever that implies). Truth to be told it's not

How can a small-timer realistically bet on FB not being worth its price? Certainly some actor is betting on that they will fail. Is there a Facebook Fail Fund around?

You express views and attitudes very similar to mine. For people who find these things interesting, I recommend checking out the so called hard problem of consciousness James Trefil, physicist - so they aren't all dopey philosophers ;) -

I agree that human metamorphosis is extremely interesting, but this line I really don't get: > Consciousness is mortally bound to the physical body, and will die along with it regardless of how many mental copies are made. I don't under

Lets just hope the use of "traffic accident" as a euphemism doesn't increase in order to end a trial prematurely. I would prefer to use my trial version for as long as possible (or would I really? Look at all those nice plugins!). Some (rat

Thank you for your in depth and insightful reply - what you say makes a lot of sense. Good luck with your thesis and I would personally love to see a summary of your findings posted here on HN :)

I think a point that is often glossed over here is the extreme value of compound interest and self-inforced feedback loops. Calling someone a genius is a cop-out, in my opinion. If you're a Tao or Feynman, chances are you have been doing "m

I was expecting some fluff piece about how to make a passive income on SEO while living a jetset life style. This was not it. The article makes surprisingly much sense actually.

I don't think Microsoft is competing to have the best search results. As long as it gives somewhat ok results for standard queries that's fine for them, from a business standpoint of view.

Right, didn't think of that. Here in Sweden Alex is just shorthand for Alexander (which means something like "defender of the men"). The female version here is either Alexandra or Alexis.
