For what it's worth I still think the name is great. The meaning of words change. The identity of Hacker School is strong, and I could easily see it deciding what hacker and school means in the future, not unlike YC and the words hac

Thank you for your detailed response. I understand that there are technical limitations when it comes to permission, but it still makes me uneasy when I have to give that many permissions to a new app. Maybe it's the granularity at Twi

This is a cool idea, but can someone explain why this requires the following Twitter permissions? - Update your profile. - Post Tweets for you. - Access your direct messages. In general I'm at loss why so many apps require so many perm

This seems bigger than Altair Basic to me. If this thing works well it's huge already. Battery time is one of the biggest problems for people working out of the office (along with decent internet and peace of mind).

There's an interesting meta pattern here. pg has obviously thought a lot about this change, he's the creator of HN and he's the one who knows the site the best. All pg is saying is this: let's try it out and see if it w

While you may be right that future generations will condemn us for them, none of those things are remotely controversial enough. You can say any of them in almost any setting and people will mostly yawn. Many people think prisons should be

I'm just paraphrasing Musk's vision. It's not a dream; he's actively working on getting to Mars within the next decade or so. People seem to forget their history. It wasn't that long ago America was (re-)discovered.

I'm not sure what the point of your argument is, but this strikes me as short-sighted reasoning. Going to Mars is just the first step. It's about making (human) life multiplanetary. It's a long term game and extends beyond th

If it was about money Musk would have retired already. Tesla and SpaceX are both hugely risky endeavours. It is not unlikely that them being for profit makes them more likely to succeed in the long term.

I think Airbnb has the potential - and wants to - be as equipped as hotels are in most of those dimensions. That's why they reimbursed the person whose house was vandalized, and why they do keep banking info on file (IIRC). It is true

You are saying: (a) This could never happen a hotel room. (b) Since Airbnb is illegal in NYC, it's not Airbnb's fault someone is trusting them and their vetting system in NYC.* Both seems false to me. * Obviously it's not the

Stop the hating, please. It has a hugely negative effect on HN in general and on creators specifically. Don't use it if you don't like it. Whenever I come across people who really hate me and my work it takes every ounce of energ

I would argue that it's generally a massive failure, and that history will view these models as extremely naive when it comes to judging risk. Comparing it to Newtonian mechanics is unfair. Newtonian mechanics actually work, just not f
