Render is the term used by many templating languages to denote transforming a template to a result using parameters. So in the case of web apps that use templates, it's the terminology commonly used (you could argue about its correctne

Hi HN, this is my first blog post (ever). I'm working on improving my writing so I've decided to write every now and then. Feedback on the style, as well as the content, is very welcome!

1. That getting good at something can sometimes be quick; if you have the right background. But when it's not quick - that doesn't mean you can't get good. It simply means it's a process. Experiencing the part where I&#x

This is nonsense IMHO. This is just an encoding scheme to encode data. Just because blocks used by the encoding scheme are cached and reused for other data does not mean that they're not used to represent this data. If the data downloa

Yes, but you shouldn't just do that every time as calling into the event loop has its own processing cost. If you do that on each iteration of the loop, it will probably become much slower. At a previous job, I wrote a wrapper that wou

There are other costs to regular context switching as opposed to goroutines/greenlets (the green threads that gevent uses). I don't remember the details but specific attention was paid to the point of making context switching and

It could store usernames locally on the phone and use the same method to psedonymize them. It seems to me that Signal devs just have a strong preference for the convenience of using phone numbers. That's okay, but does not make the cha

AFAIK there is only ever just one thread (that runs user code). setTimeout, etc are all also invoked by the event loop. I can vaguely recall (but it's 1AM so I didn't verify - take with a grain of salt) that nodejs uses an a threa

I don't know, but I was actually discussing time when the thread is performing pure CPU operations and not doing any IO. In this case the JS code does not yield to the event loop, so any other requests waiting will stall. This is actua

The problem that's described here - "green" threads being CPU bound for too long and causing other requests to time out is one that is common to anything that uses an event loop and is not unique to gevent. node.js also suffe

I don't get how it's a hard problem. For many years we got by without using phone numbers as identifiers to communicate online. Why not usernames? Or any other one of the myriad of phone number alternatives

I think it does have intrinsic value - that value lies in allowing some people, in some areas, to circumvent tracking or avoid authorities. To those people, BTC brings value which cannot be had elsewhere. My personal belief is that this is

I use a Thinkpad T490s and it works great with Ubuntu out of the box. Only thing that doesn't work is clicking the touchpad for right click, but since the Thinkpad comes with physical left and right buttons that was a non-issue.

I'm guessing that the NSA website uses recaptcha, which is served by Google. Perhaps in order to comply with strict origin policy, they want everything on nsa.gov to be served from their domain. They seem to have a reverse proxy that p

I didn't say it's too bloated, but whipping up a script like this would take me time in the scale of minutes, while adding a basic UI would make that hours, and not be too useful. To be even a little useful the UI has to do quite
