Let's hope death by obsolescence. Being forced to learn a proprietary not-invented-here scripting language with little value-add over Bash is an anathema to any developer.

Vulkan is roughly identical to DX12 in functionality; Microsoft will not sign UWP apps that link to Vulkan/OpenGL.

This is pretty one-sided. UWP is nice for users because it sandboxes apps that are built for it. Some benefits: 1. I know the game won't dump save and log files in my Documents folder (that place is mine, GTFO). 2. I know there won&#x

It's a bit of a game design problem too, since you may want to optimize for how "fun" the AI is to play against. There are patterns of behavior that can be equivalently challenging, but greatly varying in terms of how intere

There are many ways to win wars against guerillas, but just as guerilla attacks on civilians are incompatible with western values, most of the responses are similarly incompatible.

Collisions are when two different inputs hash to the same value, which breaks the security of the hash function. If a hash function is cryptographically secure, it has the property where finding collisions is infeasable, which makes it suit

No true Scotsman... Monoliths have the advantage of being able to trivially take out a global lock. Removing global locks from a monolith to migrate to a micro-service deployment adds a ton of design and engineering cost.

This is also true for GPUs - in cryptocurrency mining every memory access equals more money spent on power. If you can make equivalent (in terms of throughput) compute/memory trade-offs, you always go compute.

Sort of related, it's always felt odd that Hulu Plus (paid) forces ads on the user. Seeing as time is extremely valuable, why not provide an option to skip ads? F2P games figured this out long ago, you annoy users into paying to make t

I'd say the biggest advantage if you take out memory access is not latency (since most of the time latency gets hidden via pipelining), but power consumption. When developing kernels the amount of times memory is accessed has huge impa

How is Ethash compute intensive relative to Cuckoo Cycle? EDIT: Ethash does 1 SHA3 at the beginning, 1 SHA3 at the end, and 64 rounds of FNV1-32 x 32. Verification considers the intermediate digest, so really 1 SHA3 to verify. You do more S

Not true - AMD GCN also has bitselect, which does dst = (A & B) | (~A & C). This is equivalent to the SHA-256 Ch "Choose" function. It also can be used to compose the SHA-256 Maj "Majority" function with an addit

Machine separation for one (OS level exploits, escalation of privileges in one component compromising another). Network partitioning with strong protocol filters between security tiers can be invaluable.

Surprised security wasn't mentioned as a reason to decouple services (IMO security is a top reason to split out a service). Otherwise I tend to agree with the author.

Yes - the code is wrong. A correct implementation would adjust the probability of sampling based on how many items have been trialed. EDIT: I misread it as rand(n), rand(idx) is correct.

CyanogenMod's Privacy Guard gets this right. It defaults to a silently fail permission policy, and notifies you when an app is requesting access. You can then chose to deny, allow, deny always, or allow always. It's the antidot
