I'm personally not sure there's much Firefox 4 is missing compared to Chrome at the moment. Can you explain what Chrome has that you'd like to see?

Use the 32-bit version of Firefox for Netflix. See the release notes here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/4.0b8/releasenotes/

The Chrome team doesn't fully work in public either. For example, Crankshaft was developed in secret and then dumped into the bleeding-edge branch on the day it was announced.

You can install Firefox too. I've often wondered whether Android's default browser (MicroB) being bundled with the OS will prove to be a blessing or a curse. It's nice that it's always there and loads quickly due to WebKit being a part of t

I've been a fan of Instinctiv for quite a while. As someone who mainly listens to music while doing something else (like coding), it's great to have a music player that doesn't require any maintenance beyond hitting "next song" every once i

According to the link you posted, that's over four times slower than C++ virtual method dispatch (and note that most method calls in ordinary C++ code are not virtual). Also, IMP caching is hardly easy and is quite fiddly: see for example t

The article defines the super-rich as the top 1%. 300M * 1% = 3,000,000. The Forbes 400 is 400 out of the 3,000,000 super-rich, hardly a representative sample. Instead I'd prefer to turn to studies of social class, such as Thompson & Hi

Depends how you define standard of living. If we consider "standard of living" to mean "happiness", as you seem to imply, that actually correlates well with real (inflation/CPI-adjusted) income. Accordingly, happiness levels have been flat

Yep. For example, check out Facebook's open source projects: https://github.com/facebook The OCaml-based static analysis stuff is particularly interesting. They've got some smart people working over there.

You mention that job listings get hundreds of replies, yet just a few pages back we have an article [1] about the short supply of developers in Silicon Valley. What gives? [1]: http://www.quora.com/Silicon-Valley/Why-is-there-such-a-stun..

Exactly. The issue here is not a battle between a belief that consumers have the right to do whatever they want with whatever signal or device they possess and the belief that consumers don't have that right. It's an issue of open vs. close

That's a bit oversimplified. The purchasing decisions that consumers make regarding Apple products are driven by the overall value of the complete product. That doesn't necessarily say anything about the individual components that make up

Mozilla measures many of these at http://graphs.mozilla.org/ . "Ts" is startup time; "Tshutdown" is shutdown time; "GFX" includes 8 I believe.

I think it'd be useful to benchmark GWT -generated JS (and also Objective-J), but not Scheme2Js, which is rarely if ever used in practice. Compilers for different languages will emit code with completely different performance characteristi

Yes, the legacies of colonialism (of which slavery was just one) have been huge. Coupled with the AIDS epidemic, which has had an impact that's nearly impossible to overstate, they've economically devastated sub-Saharan Africa.
