There are a few, the most realistic is the Bohm interpretation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Broglie%E2%80%93Bohm_theory The basic idea is that observed decoherence is not caused by wave collapse, but is caused by interaction with nois

This is not a one-time pad. It uses a key that contains less information than the message. It is still possible to brute-force the key if you have enough data. It is a great way to make the key hard to copy, which is how encryption is usual

How about continued fractions? Unlike floating point, they can represent any rational number in finite memory. Using generators, you can even represent many irrational numbers, like square roots and pi, in finite memory. Richard Schroeppel

I used OpenBSD a lot ten years ago but I don't anymore. Two things have changed: OpenGL and filesystems. I use Linux on GUI machines because it has good GPU support. I use FreeBSD on servers because it has ZFS.

I like serifs so I use Luxi Mono. It used to be the RedHat console font and it was inspired by the Sun console font. On Debian it's in the ttf-xfree86-nonfree package.

If Apple needs a better filesystem, they should consider HAMMER from DragonflyBSD. It's BSD-licensed, unencumbered by patents, and way more sophisticated than HFS+.

I am guilty of upvoting every Go post. But my work has nothing to do with Google. I just really love the language and want it to succeed. Go maps very closely to how I think about programming. It has more useful features than other language

Getting the length of a string is a bad idea. Usually you do this because you want to iterate over the string one character at a time. But getting the character at a particular index is an O(n) operation, so iterating over a string this way

Install fail2ban to protect against these scans. With its default settings, it will ban an IP for ten minutes if it fails to login six times. That doesn't inconvenience real users but it makes it impractical to brute-force a password. It's

There was no System 7.2 or 7.3.5. They went from 7.1.2 to 7.5. You may be thinking of 7.1.2 (the first PowerPC release) or 7.5.3 (the last full version posted as a free download).

This Lebbeus Woods has some great artwork. I'd never heard of him before but I found these two pieces by him: http://historyofourworld.files.wordpress.com/2009/11/lw-iii.... http://www.krobarch.com/images/winners/2012/entry3353.jpg

It's really impressive how their sophisticated image processing algorithms are only a few lines long. If I wrote an algorithm to detect rivers, it would be hundreds of lines long and less effective. These guys tackle it mathematically and i

It sounds like you are referring to "Hackers" by Steven Levy. It's a great book and that's a great story. I've posted it here: http://frammish.org/used_up.html

It's not sensational to claim that English is Scandinavian. German and English are both descended from Norse, so they are both Scandinavian if you go back 1500 years. What this linguist is saying is that modern English is more Scandinavian

Yes, that is what I'm saying. Security: Adding a layer of security on a per-filesystem basis is not sufficient or necessary. It is only conceivably useful as a backup plan when the actual security system has failed, and at that point it is

Looks pretty cool but the pawn rules are a hack. Since "forward" is no longer a well defined direction, I propose allowing pawns to move to any adjacent square, and capture to any diagonal square.
