Right, there are laws that govern certain types of contracts. I think the problem there is that a lease is regulated, rather than contracts in general. As a counter example, the contracts that members of sober living houses sign indicat

Good luck! What's kind of cool about this issue is that it attracts support from citizens of all political stripes - whether you're a farmer who just wants to be able to fix his own damn tractor, or a hacker who wants to futz with

Under American contract law you can sign away any of your constitutional rights. Be careful what you put your magic squiggles on.

I don't think it's a bluff, that was a poor choice of words. I meant something along the lines of "taking up the challenge".

That's when we'll know he's really gone off the rails. I think I read that Kerry had said something like "sure, we'll extradite him...if you have evidence that he committed any crimes." Since any evidence they

I think the present situation in Turkey is a great argument in favor of putting the nukes somewhere else. I believe they're all gravity bombs, which makes them mostly symbolic, just like the nukes we store in other NATO countries.

I wonder why regex libraries don't do this then? Isn't /\s+$/ backreference free? Or does including the anchor change that?

Nah you're right. I posted in anger, then edited it. Seems like I need to get a sleep(3) in there somewhere.

It seems like there should be a way to determine whether a regex can be compiled using the classic O(n) DFA algorithm or with whatever madness PCREs use to support backtracking and so on. Anybody know if any regex engines attempt this? Obvi

The field of technology is undergoing exactly the same growing pains that law and medicine did some time ago. I think in the next decade or two I think we will see women achieving the same kind of representation in tech that they have in la

There's an interesting parallel between the arguments being made here and the argument that Schnier made against government controlled backdoors. Even if we suppose that only reasonable warrants would be granted for the use of such a b

I want you to help me understand something. Why do you feel the need to rationalize away the fact that getting involved in tech is something that was easier for you because you're a dude? It seems like there's this sense in which

It's really bullshit to ask people from disadvantaged groups to take on additional responsibilities and "educate" their less disadvantaged peers. To give an example that is, in my opinion, much more disturbing, but qualitativ

Fewer women are interested because they don't want to work, go to school, and socialize in sexist environments. While I'm sure that not all "tech environments" are sexist, enough of them are to convince women not to pur

Yeah, also any linguist can tell you that women use language differently than men. Even in written communication you can usually, consciously or not, tell unless someone is very deliberately trying to appear to be the other gender.

So I don't think that hiding factors that (we think might) influence biased people is the right way to address bias. Let's say a woman uses this voice modulator in an interview and gets a job that she wouldn't have otherwise.

This is a great writeup. I especially like that you make the actual concrete case for micro-services instead of the hype driven garbage we usually see. Do you have trouble hiring qualified perl devs?

Oh wow, that looks amazing! I wonder how long it takes to transform those clips though...basic neural style transfer takes a few minutes on a standard gaming rig, so it probably takes a big machine or a few hours to do this.

I agree that neural style transfer doesn't mean much in terms of art, but it sure makes some cool looking stuff! Also, as I've mentioned in my top-level comment, it's a great way to explore GPU programming and deep learning.

Neural style transfer is extremely fun to play with. If you have a system with a recent-ish graphics card (I'm doing fine with my GTX 970), put a linux on it and check out the many GitHub projects that implement this stuff (some of the
