For your thing about not looking at certs... that's not true since all browsers now show the 'O' in the address bar for EV certs. And people definitely look at those, in my experience.

No? You're assuming things that aren't true in a lot of countries.

I don't know how to say this nicely, but you don't know what you're talking about. Having done the move and spent considerable amounts of none trivial money, this is not worth it for anyone unless you need a physical presence in the US

Please direct me to these efficient lawyers. I think everyone in the world would like to become their customer. It's pretty clear to me that you have never been involved with "private litigation".

And? If you're dealing with people who have potentially compromised immune systems on a daily basis, you should be taking every vaccine possible.

Actually, this is a horrible idea, because it's easier to run a software company outside the US, since you don't have to deal with the IRS. Once you gain a physical presence, you're now liable for both federal and state taxes (depending o

Even Google doesn't let execs (up to a certain level) fly C class (but you can, sometimes, if you're smart about bookings). Pretty sure they've done the analysis. :)

That's only because D&B have to look like their existence is necessary. So they just trawl for new entries at companies house and auto-generate the entry in their DB. They're not the only ones though.

The principal never increases. You're basically just renting the house from the bank. And this is common (not good, but common) in every country where interest is tax deductible, because you can multiply your 'renting' power by your top mar

There are some city blocks in the Financial District where you're perpetually in the dark and are essentially in a wind tunnel due to the tall buildings. It's creepy as hell. :) I presume that's mostly the reason.

There's literally no reason to ever run your own DNS when Route53 and DNSMadeEasy exist.

While I agree with you, I think the anecdote is still useful because it shows that the problems of the present are really problems of the past too. Software quality improves, sure, but you can still learn from the past.

I don't know how good Heartbeat is these days. I'm just going based on our experience back then and GitHub's stated experience now. We (in a new place) use our own fail over code now, but we're running databases instead of file servers -- a

We used to STONITH (with an APC network power switch) over serial. It didn't really help because serial ports have really bad quality control, and lose a lot of 'packets'. :) We ended up with dedicated serial cards, and multiple network lin

Ahhh... good old Heartbeat. We used to use Heartbeat in a similar setup back in 2001. It was the worst architectural decision we ever made, and after one too many a failure (where STONITH/split-brain/etc killed the wrong machine, or both ma

Having come from a country where the postal service was privitized, I'm going to let you in on a little secret: it sucks. But hey, they're profitable... One of the (very few) things the US does better than most countries is the USPS. It sho
