I would think they took into account cleaning (multiple times per day), maintenance, vandalism and loss of seating to come up with that number. Especially the latter, since this isn't the first time they've done something insane for a few e

Quite the contrary. If an engineer asks for considerably less than they're worth, that goes into the "may be out of touch with his profession" column. With the exception of starters and a few semi-autistic outliers, engineers that have no i

I beg to differ. It would be "better for everyone" if this attempt at censoring and balkanizing the internet would be undermined in any way possible.

Ironically, this kind of "cost-savings" is exactly what the Netherlands railways have been doing over the years (only by closing half the existing toilets). However, they ended up with the ultimate solution: ordering new trains without any

That's a prejudice I would be careful with. English is the working language for most developers all over the world, but not every culture is overly sensitive to swearing. Context is everything.

Two thoughts come to mind. (And that's all they are, just thoughts, possibly contradictory ones at that.) One, we're all climbing the vertical mountain wall. It's called life. This even applies to those who seem to have it easy. Suicide is

We're currently using 1Password with the database on Dropbox. Which is extra convenient since it allows read-only access via Dropbox without needing the client. The company used KeePass before, but that created a single point of failure for

Stopped reading at the "GPL folk are anti-commercial" straw man attack. This is not "a few thoughts", this is just another attempt at starting a flame war. If you want a constructive discussion, you should consider listening to other people

Although there is definitely a shift going on, I suspect it won't be half as radical as people like the author tend to evangelize. This model may be a big shift for a simple web app, but for larger applications with lots of business logic i

Like many, you may have confused copyright law with ordinary respect and decency. Personally, I'm against any and all forms of copyright. That doesn't mean I cannot consider people that pass of other people's work as their own to be compl

Personally, I'm not such a fan of the lack of transparency on HN, because it makes the manipulations of the moderators very opaque and shady. My previous account got slowbanned despite the karma accumulated over years. If you're going to ru

I think you're making the mistake a lot of people seem to make on HN, and in my experience is typical for programmers in general. Telling someone their code sucks does not equal telling them they suck. You are not your code.
