So good to see so many articles pop up on hn regarding self-hosting and home labbing

That was a good read. But this is the kind of experience that makes technical people fall in love with self-hosting, but also keeps the majority of the population away. Most of the people don't want the hassle of managing a self-hostin

I think your comments might be overly negative. Would you expect the first model from an organization to top the chart? It's a process, I think they did pretty good. They have enough resources to continue improving on it

I was looking at something similar a couple of days ago. I think a physical key like a yubi key is a great way to fight bot traffic. And apparently cloudflare already ran project to test this out, and found some small drawbacks. So they

I can't wait for self-hosting to become the norm and companies to not have the option to do this anymore

An operating system for self-hosting https://github.com/malmoos/malmo I saw the options out there were not fully open source, or had other limitations so I started working on this better one. Based on Debian, apps are

I agree that this title is very opinionated. If the country would have created enough electricity, the percentage wouldn't be a problem

Not really, no. It is one of the most important attributes of good journalism that you have to be as impartial. That's why papers have separate sections for Opinions

For people outside of Ireland: these rates are not the norm. They are usually around 20-22. Can go down 17 if on special plans, or even 12 if you have an electric car.

The problem I see is that git commit meaaages are not as flexible at storing context information as files. Or easier to retrieve. We do have --grep to search them but it's definitely not as poweful as all the tools we have to handle f

This looks really nice. Great job. Looking at adding it to the malmo.network store for self-hosters

If you need to just offer free access to your open source repo, gitea is a nice alternative and super easy to self host. Github also has the community, which you lose, true, but it depends on what matters more to you. I can help you setup g

I think there is an explosion of new apps, the problem is still distribution in marketing. If I develop a new vibe coded app, it will still take some time for it to be known. And also get good. Also, what another commenter said that most o

Valid points. But I see self-hosting even as renting a VPS from someone and running the service there. Which solves most of the dev ops problems that I dont wanna bother with. Maybe it's not "actual" self-hosting, but conceni

Great app! Great to see the progress with it. The biggest complaint has always been how hard it is to self-host it, but that's not true anymore. If you have a good underlying system that handles all the boring stuff, you can actually h

There are simpler options now to self-host these kinds of apps. It's not that hard anymore

That's true. But I think it's the same case as a bad actor owning a domain for himself. They still need to do some policing so it doesn't pull down the whole TLD

I actually think this is a really good concept. There is no perfect solution for what they're trying to do, but I think they have most of the things covered. Offering one free per person is nice, it can be tricky to enforce but I think

I think it's important to care about these things though. You want competition but you also want fair competition

This is a push by one individual, or maybe a small group. I don't think we should generalize this to the whole European commission, or the whole EU. Hopefully and most likely it will be shut down if put up for a vote.

Even if you go with an open source AI model, it will still make a lot more financial sense to pay a provider then actually invest in the hardware to self-host it. It's definitely worth investing in self-hosting the agent infrastructure

I went over their website in the description and I'm still finding it hard to understand how they work. Do contributors fund the pool that then pays for API cost of using a model?

Saas subscriptions for something that should be usage based. It's great for the business, not that great of a deal as a user.
