The metaphor doesn't work because all of the things mentioned have to be individually fabricated. But software doesn't. Copies are free. Thats the magic of software, you don't need much of it - you just need to be correct

This is very US centric way of looking at it. This whole hero story about Tesla might be required to push US market but would it matter to EU or China? It's very likely market would transition to EVs because of environment/economi

The whole story of Skoda is interesting because they were bought by Volkswagen as "budget" brand but kept their own development department. They get consistently pushed down as the cars shouldn't compete with VW but they do.

The problem is not if the LLM writes secure code. The problem is if you can know and understand that the code is reasonably secure. And that requires pretty deep understanding of the program and that understanding is (for most people) built

Exactly. AWS proposition was much more alluring where compute was more expensive and it required yearly estimations and updates. In times when one physical server can have 32, 64 or even 96 cores... you pack your own little datacenter right

I have seen transitions from MS suite at universities and I don't think what you are saying is true. First assumption is that there are no alternatives so you can't replace Excel as a software. Obvious ones for Excel - LibreOffice

Let's not forget url of this site is Ycombinator. As far as i know that is very far from “friendly selfless genius inventor engineer”. It's more like “ambitious finance move fast and break things programmer”.

Oh I agree. China is clearly outplaying everyone. But EU surely doesn't want to replace one leash (US tech stack) with different leash (Chinese tech stack). I keep wondering though. Is insane amount of compute really that crucial? Aren

The problem is that european politicians don't want to kill the tech $$$. They just want to bring the revenue home. They don't understand that they will never make EU big tech and that their only feasible path forward to get rid o

It doesn't matter. Office suites are a commodity. Google suite is knockoff of MS Office at certain point in time. That's just the nature of digital - information want's to be free.

They are fine. Cloud is a commodity. Hetzner and Bunny are pretty great and i am sure there are many more. The problem is when US decides to ban sales of compute hardware to EU (like they do to China). Then it will be clear who's reall
