Actually there are some in Crimea and some in Bulgaria. Literally less than 100 cases in 10 years, mostly imported, not endemic. Treated in hospitals.

What really ailes me is that all research is concentrated on killing poor mosquitoes, not the Plasmodium, which is the real cause of the disease. Should we also kill all the cats because they carry Toxoplasmae?

This is indeed blasphemy. I worked close with people who replaced Soviet DDT programme for controlling gypsy moth populations with effective biological treatment programme in 70-ies (viral agents species-specific). Cheaper, easier to apply

This is much more than a million dollar question. I know local economies depending on mosquito larvae winter haul. They sell those to fishermen. Fish populations depends on mosquito larvae in many lake and river ecosystems.

Perhaps we forgot. Eliza bot written in PROLOG by Joseph Weizenbaum circa 1964 at MIT was quite up for the task. I am sure it is still about 90% more conversational than 80% of the current online English-speaking audience.
